    Default Protectorates? No problem!

A handy trick I learned - if youve gotten very rich, offer whatever enemy is tormenting you your entire treasury in return for becoming your protectorate. If they accept (and with a big enough bribe they will),the following turn theyl give you the entire sum back as a tribute. Thats right, you loose nothing. The only problem is it will have to be quite a big bribe - hundreds of thousands - but for some factions it isnt hard to make that kind of money quickly (eg a Hellenic faction controlling all of the Aegean).

Sounds like it could be a cool trick

While it may come in handy, especially if you don't like forced "diplomacy" - it certainly is not cool.
    1) It is too old to be cool; and it is NOT retro.
    2) Those allies don't give back ALL of it. Oh, no. They keep a very substantial amount of it - and they only give it back if they are liquid enough to.

I wouldn't make it a habit. It would defeat the object of it being a command and conquer game.

sounds nice - ive never had that kind of money though.

i have never ever ever managed to get a protectarate, even with single province states.

currently i have a massive hay empire and i find my income has stuck around 30k for years if anything with further conquests it now declines.

i am bordering the KH at the moment (having just destroyed the maks) will the greek state really give me much extra money?

They are slightly less likely to betray you then an ally.
