Can you edit the Alpha Channel?

The title says it all. Can you go in with a black or white paintbrush and effect what the game sees in the alpha channel of a symbol or banner? I'm hoping for a yes, otherwise I'm stuck on a symbols step...

yep

so long as you have a programme that handles them properly - you need to be able to save tga's in 32 bit setting to preserve the alpha channel.

Some programs show the alpha as a selection, some as black and white layer, altering either way should work in game.
