..when they lose several thousands of mnai every turn?
So how come at the point of 272 they have money although their economy is crap, how did they get that money, if their economy wasn't better before, and why should it have been?

    hahaha

legit question but if you want to you can edit starting mnai to negatives for most of the factions with a large upkeep standing army then go for it

personally I like knowing my predecessors were smart enough to keep some mnai in the treasury and raise an army so I could either conquer fast and early on or disband it and focus on economy...

Well, in a lot of cases the armies are newly raised and most ancient powers were smart enough to keep a "warchest" which is close to empty at game-start.

You also have to take into account the fact that it is a game. If economies were balanced at the start of the game, by turn 10, as soon as you conquered a few territories, you would be making millions of mnai. Then there would be no challenge left and you would be able to station elite armies in every town and steamroll the whole map.

That would be why you basically have to disband your fleets (even as Carthage) and many starting troops. I've often wondered this myself. Why would Carthage build six fleets before 272 if they couldn't afford them? But MAA put in nicely.

I usually cheat just a little bit and give myself some money to start off with or if i have a settlement that can build a mine i process_cq it. Otherwise it seems like i have to sit there for many turns just building my economy to get out of negative... which is annoying

C of S, don't post any more. Look, you have posted 272, ironic if we are talking about start game.
