Default How do u make peace in 1.3

This is absurd (yes it´s a rant)

Recent game as Russia. I´m in an alliance with Sweden, amongst others, when they suddenly DoW me! Ok, so Karl XII has lost it. I took St. Petersburg and offered it right back in a peacedeal with some tech I though they could use but noooo. Ok I take Riga and did the same thing again, no!
Took Finland, no! Took Denmark, Norway and Iceland from the Danish and here´s my final offer to Sweden: Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, some +10techs, 100.000 in cash - NO!
Just to show how absurd peace negotiations ha become I offer them all above plus ALL my Russian lands except Moscow plus 5.000/ turn for 10 turns. What´s their reply? NO! They are sitting in Stockholm with no troops, no fleets, no cash since everything is razed and I´m offering them the largest empire in the game but NoOOooooooo! I´m ashamed to be a Swede.
I checked our relations and it was 216, 200 from war alone. Is it justy me or...? Has anyone managed to secure a peacedeal since 1.3 and in that case how did you do it I really want to know.

I have had these same problems after 1.3.1 patch. After the patch, I started playing the French campaign. Everything was going fine until France's old enemy, Great Britain, decided DoW. My first action was to invade Britian and capture England, then sell it back for peace. That didnt work, so i defeated Scotland, tried to sell that and England. That didnt work, so i decided to just distroy the rest of there nation. I also captured there overseas colonies and tried to give those back with the exception on Maine and New York, did take one province back. All they had left was the Algiers province that they had captured earlier. I then offered them there entire nation back and my territory of Iceland in exchange for peace, but they refused. Trying to sign peace with any nation as become a broken tactic in Empire, on any difficulty. My advice is to distroy anyone you go to war with, or prepare to have a long drawn out war.

In answer to the title, you don't. No matter how badly you thrash your enemy, "The Black Knight always triumphs!"

I've had the AI accept my demand (yes, I did threaten them!) of peace after 1.3.

Most recently playing Russia and having P-L down to two or three regions, I wanted to concentrate on finishing off Prussia so I demanded peace (together with admin costs of 2000 - hey, it costs money to draw up treaty documents!)....and they accepted.

I even got them to trade with me a turn or two later.

They did DoW me about five turns later but they did accept peace for a while.

I have had two peace settlements in 1.3.1. I had to give nothing to get them. One was with the Moguls and they settled when a bit more than half of India was taken from them...I don’t know why the settled, it may have just been a fluke.

The second settlement was with France. That was much more complex. I had tried everything and they would not settle.

At last what happened was I was moving a small siege force to besiege their last hold in Europe when they intercepted me. They lost all of their troops in the battle and were left with only the armed citizenry in the city. When I besieged them they at last settled and never broke the agreement.

Yes, I think it's pretty clear that AI diplomacy in 1.3 is broken. I've been playing as Russia, and I have never had to declare war in the entire game, since the AI always obliges. I have never made peace with anyone, either, since the AI never accepts (no matter how sweet the deal or how badly the AI is doing). I have been able to get several minor nations to be my protectorates, though (although one of them declared war on me despite it not having an army, and naturally it got crushed).

Because of the way the relations system works, the AI will only ever consider peace deals with the player if the relationship is not too bad. In other campaigns I have very occasionally had peace settlements with the AI when our relationship hasn't dipped too far below 0. But if the relationship gets too bad, then forget it - you'll never get peace. The AI will accept peace (sometimes) if you haven't fought a single battle against it; on the other hand, if you have annihilated their empire, wiped out their armies and left them with only one province and no hope of winning against you, you don't stand a chance of making peace! By eviscerating the AI's empire you make your relationship plummet to bottomless depths.

Ironically, therefore, the more the AI loses, the less likely it is to accept peace.

In 1.3.1, I have had several peace agreements even after my relationship with the AI had dipped below 200. The onion is, the AI is very likely to re-declare war the very next turn after it has accepted peace. But here comes the really sneaky, "hate the player" part CA has designed into the game. I was playing as Austria. France declared war on my ally, Savoy. I joined in, but no hostilities really took place between Austria and France (not counting the French raiding my trade routes). Once, Savoy got annihilated, I offered peace (no cash, no land). French accepted. Two turns later, France declared war on one of my protectorates. Of course, I joined my protectorate but noticed that my relationships with the whole European world suffered a -25 hit for "dishonoring treaties". Shortly after, France annihilated the protectorate. I sued for peace, which was accepted. Guess what, a turn later, France declared war on another one of my allies, dragging me back into the war for a hefty -50 "dishonoring treaties" relationship hit (it seems, the hit grows larger for 'repeated offenses') with everyone in Europe (including the allies that I joined). That's just BS... But I believe, CA is addressing this in the next patch (supposedly, there would be no diplomatic hit for joining an ally). At least I hope they're addressing this.

The way things stand now in 1.3

    1) The player should avoid ANY alliances. Those are likely to get the player in trouble even if the player honors the alliance religiously. The best faction to play is Prussia: no alliances to start with. Sweden is the same, I believe.

    2) The player should never sue for/accept peace. Accepting the peace is just likely to destroy player's diplomatic standing once the AI finds a sneaky "backdoor" way to restart hostilities.

Having no alliances is a pretty funny thing. I was playing as the Marhartha confederacy and everywhere on the Alliance map is bright Green because I'm not allied, and only one nation borders me. Meanwhile everyone else is at each other's throats, squabbling over inches of turf while the promised land of milk, tea, and elephants is unharmed and reaping in 10k per turn.

Really though, it needs to be fixed.

    You don't.

CA took players' calls for "more difficulty" to mean "remove the diplomacy system" instead of improving the AI.

As some posters have mentioned, sometimes it happens, but rarely.
"Sit now there, and look out upon the lands where evil and despair shall come to those whom thou lovest. Thou hast dared to mock me, and to question the power of Melkor, master of the fates of Arda. Therefore with my eyes thou shalt see, and with my ears thou shalt hear; and never shall thou move from this place until all is fulfilled unto its bitter end". -Tolkien
