Well having just played some of my Romani campaign and conquering most of Greece Ive come to one of the weirdest conclusions: enemy attacks always come in twos, even if there are many, many, many more of the buggers waiting.

Example 1:Southern Greece, just across the pond from Korinthos. Having been ambushed by THREE Greek armies my single legion pulls back to the mountains, where I expect 3 huge assaults to come. Sure enough the first wave attacks, a full army of phalanxes (aargh!) But, through my own tactical flexibility and the terrain, I beat the army off.

Second Greek army attacks, no surprise here! Expecting my experienced legions to be cut to pieces if left to the pc(letting the pc fight is as bad as scribbling "kill me quick" on your soldiers helmets) I take to the field and send the Greeks fleeing, before wiping out all of the second. Tired and injured my men braced themselves for another attack and I was thinking to myself the possible tactics I could use with my few men. If the third army attacked it could easily wipe me out, and my soldiers would be sent reeling back to Italy. Oddly enough the AI never attacked, and now Koinon Hellenon is a name remembered by the wind....

Example 2:Well the Getai, my previous allies have attacked me (surprise surprise) and a Legion advancing to capture Makedonian held Byzantanion is forced to face left, raise the shields and grip the leathers: down from the Baltic mountains swarm thousands of hairy Getai thirsty for my boys blood. Come get some. First attack is beaten off, and I'm confident I can survive another assault.

Following the first attack another army arrives, but there's a big difference: the first army was full of raw recruits, and this one is chock full of grizzled veterans. Bugger. Losing most of my units I manage to secure a narrow victory, and prepare to kill as many barbarians in the next wave as I can: Pella is practically undefended, and I won't let them take it without a fight. But once again....no third attack. Creepy, eh no?

PS-What I find even weirder is how the enemy armies attacked ONE AT A TIME instead of all at once. I dont know if this happens to any of you, but it does for me. Oi humbug
