Default Noob question : How to play 4turns a year with huge armies?

Lurking in AAR's I noticed some use a 4 turn a year system, and play with units 4 times bigger then mine.

How do you achieve that? I looked here and there on the forum but did not find the answer, maybe I did not enter the good words in the search case...

4 turns per year comes from activating the EB background script. Click a settlement and listen to the advisor.

Unit size is set in the options in the main menu, before you start a game (think it's under graphics settings). You must start a new game after changing it.

Thanks a lot for the info, here's a gift :

I'll have probelm if I have to listen the advisor. I can read english but I usually do not understand a word of spoken english. My teacher had a terrible southern french accent and I understand only other southern Frenchmen when they speak english no kidding ! (and I'm not hearing very well anyway...)

May someone tell me here what I have to do?

Err... The advisor talks to you in text. He says you should click the "Show me how"-button.

I play only with large units (my computer isn't tough enough for huge ), but the big difference in terms of strategy is that larger units deplete your cities' populations more, so you have to take more care not to build too many. Tactically, larger units are more unwieldy but better able to hold a battle line. I prefer larger units for this reason.

I play with unit size even at normal; because I don't like battles so much and with smaller units you can get it done faster (at least I think so).

I never thougt about this! But even with normal size I had the population of my capital Pella in my Macedon campaign temporary down to 500 because of seiges(1.Epeiros, 2. Pontus, 3.Getai) and recruitment.

I used to play with smaller maniples (Triarii were 82, for example) but changed to larger ones (Triarii now 162) and have noticed a few differences. When sieging, rushing units up to the walls means you lose a much lower ratio of men. The wall defences may still kill 10 Hastati but 10 of 162 is a much lower percentage than 10 of 82. 1/16th versus 1/8th (roughly). The odds are therefore stacked a little better for the attacker.

If you use timed battles with the standard limit (can it be changed? I haven't bothered to check) it takes far longer to destroy an enemy squad. The net effect is that you need to be sneakier in getting over or through the walls if you want time enough to capture the town square. It also makes mining the walls to knock a hole through them more a viability because even though you're losing men running past those flying arrows, the ratio's are not as bad.

With larger units sizes you end up with much larger personal body guards for your generals. The hitting power is effectively increased when charging. The ratio gap between an enemy unit's defence versus your general's charge bonus widens.

In my opinion all of these slight differences (and probably more that I have yet to notice) make the game more fun, more rewarding and probably more accurate. My PC is a bit of a lame dog so I had to turn the graphics setting down a bit, like no grass, to get the larger maniple sizes but it was well worth it.
