Thread: My Next Epic AAR

    Default My Next Epic AAR

Well I have chosen Three possible factions I would be willing to Play. Basically I want to try Some of these wonderful spear based units I have seen. The Phalynx is really cool and since I am more defensive in my battle style this could be good. I have played as Kart Quarthast and loved it! I liked the combination of solid spears with fast moving light infantry and powerful cavalry. I played Greece in an RTR game...but thats about it. Let me know what you think...your input is greatly appreciated

If you want a faction besides Carthage which has powerful calvery and solid infantry I'd vote macedon. KH would be a different experience altogether since they have excellent infantry but poor calvary. Hum this is a tough choice man.

I’d say Carthage. I haven’t read any AARs for them, and they are an interesting faction.

Besides, I have selfish reasons; I’ve played as the others, but not as Carthage, so an AAR would give me a taste of what the game play with them is like, and maybe some strategies to try when I get around to them.

Carthage would also allow for interesting role-playing opportunities. And elephants, don’t forget about elephants!

Kart-Hadast is very interesting, as you attested yourself. Quite flexible, and you can take revenge on the Romans for the effective punishment you handed out in that campaign.

Still, I voted Makedon. They have excellent cavalry, a lot of good phalanxes, and start in a difficult position, even moreso on huge population scale. Plus you need to take revenge on the Romans.

The Koinon does have poor cavalry, but great infantry as well. But it may be hard to effectively role-play your generals as the structure of the KH is different from most other nations / factions.

    It is a tough choice.

Thanks for your most important input! Im leaning towards Carthage but Makedonia does have some interesting options as well.

KH is actually a very good faction to do an aar on....due to the fact that you can have different powerful families, and roleplay them vieing for control i.e. the Spartans trying to maintain power while the Attikos and Rhodios attempt to keep them in check. That sort of thing.

Out of those choices, I like Makedonia. They are good empire builders. With Carthage, you can build an empire and confront the Romans, but they don't have any grand goals. With Makedonia, you have the chance to build up a good base of power away from AS, then challenge them, at the time of your choosing, for Alexander's empire.

    Hello there,

I voted for the "Koinon Hellenon". Apart from the RP-potential, my vote is based on the Victory-Map, meaning: take a look at the provinces the KH has to own if that faction wants to reach Victory ...
Towards the end of the book, the Moties quote an old story from Herodotus:

"Once there was a thief who was to be executed. As he was taken away he made a bargain with the king: In one year he would teach the king's favorite horse to sing hymns."
"The other prisoners watched the thief singing to the horse and laughed. 'You will not succeed,' they told him. 'No one can.' To which the thief replied, 'I have a year, and who knows what will happen in that time. The king might die. The horse might die. I might die. And perhaps the horse will learn to sing.'"

The problem that the unity within the KH would not have been a historical given. Even moreso once the immediate threats to the three cities have been dealt with. Role-playing has potential, but there are also a few issues to contend with.

I can imagine Sparta and Athenai vying for the honour of who liberated Demetrias, Pergamum etc. from those Makedonians. You would expect quite a few irrational actions for glory, with disregard to safety.

Not to mention the differences in army selection and competence with said armies between the different family factions. A poor Infantry Commander should prove himself barely competent - and thus succeed once in a while in obtaining a totally unnecessary defeat - yet the penalties have too little effect on a competent human player. Quality of command is one of the differences between the various family factions, so you can't conveniently ignore that completely. Clear victory after Clear victory is a bit of a stretch for the poor commanders.

The way families are working does not make the forging of unity easier. You would need to write down which family faction dominates each and every province, so that you can role-play building construction as well, and assignment of governors. Spartans are a bit less likely to develop an extensive sea-trade and harbor network than the other factions. Etc.

I voted Mac. Karthadast is, imho, too much like the romans. If you play as Mac you will have makedonian-style phalaxes, very good cav, as well some of the best/coolest elite units in the game!

Karth also have a great setup, and is really fun to play. But as I said, you will pretty much fight over the same land, with pretty much the same kind of units as the romans.

Why does everyone keep talking about "revenge" for the Go-Karts?

In 272 they had no bad relations with Rome.

Although they are, along with Selukia, Ptolemy, and Baktria the most diversified faction.

I voted Karthadast for no particular reason really

If you really want an epic game, I suggest Pontus/Hayasdan/Saka on VH/H...

It's nice to get steamrolled by the ai for a change

Yeah! I really recommend Darth AI. You find it in the "EB Unoffcial Modding Projects" subforum, the thread is on the first page, you cant miss it!

I also really recommend eighter citymod or AI balancing mod (or maybe citymod togheter with the AI balanced mods merc file, should be an awesome match), you find them both in the same subforum where you can read more about them.

Good look with your choice. I recommend the "City-Mod". Take at look at it.

the gold ridden hills of Iberia... the wide lands of Africa... the warm sunny island of Sicily... it all can be yours with the use of seasoned Africans, proffessional Carthaginians, disciplined Iberians, fierce Gauls, and devoted Samnites and frightening elephants commanded by your excellent generals...
your great fleets prowl the seas, sinking all in your path... and your merchant fleets bring gold to your coffers as a rich farmer fattening a pig...
Kart-hadast is an ancient city, cut off from its homeland, but powerful and ready to extend its dominance over the Mediterranean...

choose Safot Softim biQarthadast if the above appeals to you...

remember, the Belaerics were paid with wealth, wine, and women... you want wealth, wine, and women don't you? It's an offer you can't refuse...

I also have a Carthage campaign going, and I must say it is the funnest I've ever had. Although I've been bogged down in southern Italy for about 20 years, it's definitely one of the most challenging campaigns I've ever had. I don't see how you steamroll like you do. I can't afford more than three armies; one for each theater of battle (Africa, Italy, and Iberia). The Romans are a real pain in the ass, and my troop quality leaves something to be desired. The Lucanians have proven quite useful, however. They're cheap and relatively effective. They can even hold a battle line against Hastati. I still can't conquer a Roman city though, without jeoparding Rhegion. Good stuff. :)
