    Default CHKDSK frenzy

The last few weeks I've been having issues that checkdisk needs to be run very very often by some reason (not every startup, but around half to 1/3 of the times).
The computer seems to otherwise work fine, but I got a feeling that there's some kind of malware causing this.

AVG isn't picking anything up, but some days after this issues started the resident shield has stopped working (the scanning still works). This can be unrelated.

So any ideas on what's causing this and how to fix it?

Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

Like sapi I suppose your HD is about to die. Save your data while you can.

I think that your AVG problem is unrelated to this but if your resident shield is gone then I'd suggest to activate it manually and if that doesn't work I'd assume that some other program has disabled your AVG. Nice programs don't do that.

Could be other problems, but like the others- my first thoughts are for your hard drive. You could try checking it with a SMART utility- like speedfan, although that's hardly conclusive. However, if SMART shows problems and you're getting chkdsk on boot- you're in trouble.

    About 2,5 years.

So I guess it's time to look out after a new harddrive so I'm prepared when this one dies?
    The backups are done now.

Edit: So what's the good harddrive brands?

I've always had good luck with Western Digital. Others may have their own preferences though.

    Whacker's List

    Recommend:

Seagate - 5 yr warranty, never had bad luck with them.

Western Digital Raptors - You'll pay out the wazoo, but you are basically buying an enterprise-grade drive in entry-level consumer packaging.

    Indifferent:

    Western Digital (Non Raptors)

    Avoid like the plague:

Maxtor - Yes, they are owned by Seagate now. No, they are not the same thing, design, or Quality Assurance. The quality on these drives are miserable, of the countless drives I've had fail, all but 3 have been Maxtors. I made it a point to steer people clear of these drives whenever I saw them going to purchase one at Compusa. Complete garbage.

    YMMV, IMO, etc etc.

Weird what you say about Maxtor, my external 80GB drive is a Maxtor and it served as my main internal drive for years. Or maybe I'm just lucky, currently using a 250GB Samsung though it's a replacement since the first one crashed when I tried to format it for the first time.
