    Angry CTD's

Anybody know why there are so many CTD's in M2TW and/or Kingdoms?

They're getting to be a real pain in the butt.

I have lots of memory. 350 GB of disk and 3 GB of RAM. Great video card. GFX 5900 series.

    Vanilla. No mods installed.

Anyone else experience these? I see periodic remarks but it seems to me there is little mention.

If anyone has a solution, I'd really appreciate it.

The main question here is Vista or XP?

    Thanks for the responses.

I did NOT overclock the CPU.

I run an AMD2X dual core.

    I use XP Pro.

When do you experience CTD? Is it during battle? End turn?
I was experiencing a LOT of CTD at end turn or when I saved a game. When I upgraded my hard drive to a much newer model the CTD's disappeared instantly. Who can say whether a reformat would have done the job too, but it was certainly some sort of corruption as it was trying to save the game to the hard drive.
I occassionly get crashes now in battle (usually seige) but I think that is because I have overclocked my graphics card and my PC sits behind my couch without good airflow.
Could be any reason mate, just give us a little more info.

I just got the hard drive (SATA) in October. The whole computer was built by me using new components all purchased in October 2006.

I was playing battlefield on-line, playing RTW. No CTD's

Seems to be just with M2TW and Kingdoms.

I get the CTD's anytime. No rhyme or reason. Could be end of a battle, end of a turn or middle of a turn. Could be following a move, anything.

    That's why it's so frustrating.

    I guess I'll un-install and re-install. Pain in the rear-end.

how frequent are these CTDs? i too get CTDs once in a while, mostly during battles the "M2TW encountered an unspecific error and will now exit" but since kingdoms it has just stopped twice already. the battle sound & music were still playing and i could access the task manager, switch tasks but could not get it on screen and failing to kill the m2tw process blind i had to reboot.

that said the # of CTDs is still pretty low. im was actually surprised how stable M2TW 1.0 was. the old MTW was a huge CTD fest in its release version. forced me to shelf many campaigns due to unsolveable CTD-on-end-turn issues. even RTW had this issue, though rare i lost 2 campaigns due to the same CTD stuff.

im sorry for being not of much help. it the game CTDs too frequently uninstalling, defragging and reinstalling might be worth a try.

    Thumbs up Re: CTD's

If I play for a couple of hours, I probably get a dozen CTD's.

    P.S.

I really appreciate all of the responses to my original question. I'm thinking now though, that my best bet is un-install, clean up the registry etc, defrag and re-install.

If anyone does have experience with this that they've been able to resolve, I'd like to hear from you.

I'm curious as to why you say that, as maybe you can help me with my problem. On my desktop, I use XP, and I have absolutely no problems playing M2TW or Kingdoms.

On my laptop, which is brand new and a way more kick-arse machine (better gfx card, more RAM, the whole works) I use Vista and have been having nothing but problems with Kingdoms. At first, I:

    1) Installed Kingdoms over a clean M2TW install
    2) Started the game and played 2 turns of the Britannia campaign as well as a couple of battles to make sure everything worked
    3) Tried to "unpack all," but what happens is that the unpacker starts, unpacks about half of the files, then stops, somewhere around 20,000 out of 36,000 files (in the main campaign), and when I look in the data folder, none of the files have actually been unpacked. The same thing happens trying to unpack the mods. The unpacker runs, but none of the files end up in the data folders.

After unpacking, the game kept encountering an unspecified error everytime I try to go to the battle screen and shut down. IIRC, this is the same problem that happens if the files are unpacked but the "data\descr_geography_new.txt" and "data\descr_geography_new.db" files are not deleted. But those files were not unpacked to any of the data folders when I looked for them.

So I completely uninstalled and did a brand new install of M2TW and Kingdoms, and did not run the unpacker. No I can play Britannia and The Americas no problem, but either of the other factions ctds whenever I enter the battle screens.

This is driving be batty. Any help would be appreciated.

My memory may be a bit spotty here, but I believe that Dx10 may have problems with M2TW.

Also, what is your videocard and its driver? some of the newer drivers may have issues with M2TW due to Vista and DX10.

Graphics card overclocking produces artifacts. Not crashing.

i never had crashes in m2tw but in kingdoms that i have from one day i got about 5 crashes. Hopefully i think i know why, its happening when i launch another campaign , lets see teutonic after for e.g. britania without system restart. Since it go from one aplication so then memory can have some conflicts having pieces from both campaign with similiar parameters and ctd with error report. It appears that this game(kingoms) is very fragile from the very patch installation.

    Ok.

I unpacked all. And I mean all. W2TW and Kingdoms.

Since that, I had only 2 CTD's while playing W2TW for over 3.5 hours. Big drop. I was getting em about every half hour or less. Haven't tried any Kingdoms yet. I'll try that tonight.

I don't know what the unpacking did/does, but it seemed to help the M2TW.

    Here are my specs:

    Dell Inspiron 1720
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 (2MB cache/1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB)
2GB Shared dual channel DDR2 SDRAM
    256MB nVidia GeForce 8600 GT

But I don't see how it could be a hardware problem if I am able to play some campaigns but not others. I suspect it has something to do with Vista and the security therein (i.e. it won't let certain files or folders be modified). Is anybody a Vista expert?

    Hey Goofball.

I don't use Vista. I use XP Pro. So it isn't a Vista issue per se.

So......are you admin on vista? That is often the biggest prob as you need an admin account to play most games bug free.

Also, I remember there is a way that you can revert to like DX9.0c or use it in conjunction with DX10 since DX10 will make some games alot more laggier than normal
