Hi, I've read some report that seemed to indicate that you have to be able to log into gamespy even in a LAN game, is that true? And that you can't enter IP addresses.
    Hopefully I'm wrong about this.

Just checking before I buy, because if it requires net access all the time, they've lost my purchase.

LAN game is independent of GameSpy and the internet. All you need is to have tcp/ip configured on the LAN machines and one machine host a game.

Internet games do have to go through the GameSpy server to pass the host's ip address out to the joiners. There is no option to manually enter the host's ip address to allow direct ip play over the internet.

You do not need to have internet connection to play on a LAN. AFAIK For an internet game Gamespy is just for matching, and once the game starts, the data goes straight from the player to the host computer without interference from Gamespy. After the game ends, Gamespy takes the results and logs them. Gil will be back next week.
