Thread: Did this ever happen to you?

I (England) was fighting the French for the possession of Zaragoza. I was the besieger. The French attacked my army twice: I won the first time, but suffered heavy losses: notably, a unit of mailed knights was reduced to 1 member with three silver decorations. During the second fight, I noticed that I had no unit of knights with three silvers... but also that some of my men magically returned to life! Something like 50 knights from various units and 10-20 spearman come back from Hell to face the wicked French.

Well, soldiers fallen in combat can sometimes heal and fight for their unit again. The number of these healed soldiers per battle can be viewed in the post battle screen, and the number can be affected by the commanding general's retinue or traits.

I have also had low numbered units disappear on me, and it is quite annoying indeed. Especially if the units had silver or gold chevrons - as retraining them would have made for some elite soldiers.

I agree, this is a major pain in the butt. I think it happens when unit has 5 or less soldiers.

I wonder if this feature can be turned off somehow?

I believe it's once 90% of a unit dies, it's out of the game unless healed casualties bring it back. with cavalry, with the new system, that means just 3 or more need to survive.

I've had units be completely wiped out in a battle and then return to life afterwards. Made for a nice surprise.

Some were healed. The others were men that were captured during the battle and were released. If you win a battle all your soldiers that were captured are automatic released.

And there´s bunch of traits that can bring soldiers back to life. I once killed enemy prince, it was just before he managed to rout from the battlefield as last unit, so suprisingly he was still alive when i got to the prisoners screen, shame i had to kill him since Byzantium were bankrupt...

Is it possible that those survors were automatically merged to another unit of the same type? Once I lost all but one man in an unit of Huscarls. The lone rider killed loads of enemies and captured truckloads of prisoners. He ended up with 3 gold chevrons, and didn't disappear after the battle. I had no other Huscarls in the army.

One thing to remember: the game keeps track of experience for each man in the unit separately. The displayed chevrons is the average of all surviving members at the time. Say you create a new unit of 90 men with 3 xp. All 90 will have 3 xp each, and the display will show 3 bronze chevrons. Now you go into battle. 60 of those men die before gaining any xp, while the remaining 30 gain 2 xp each. You'll have 30 men left each with 5 xp, thus the game will display 2 silver chevrons on the unit card. At the end of the battle, if 30 of the dead are recovered, you now have 30 men with 5 xp each and 30 men with 3 xp each. The average would be 4 so the card would only display 1 silver chevron. Because more experienced men tend to survive longer, it has happened to me a couple of times. I've gone from silver down to bronze when a bunch of casualties were recovered, and I have had a unit wiped completely assaulting the walls recover fully after the battle.
