I tried playing as Poland last night in the Late Era and found it quite challenging even on Normal difficulty. You start with only two provinces with Germany to the North and West, Hungary to the South, and the Mongol Horde that will eat you alive to the East. I know this because East was my chosen route for expansion. I built up two sizeable forces, invaded and conquered one of the Mongol territories after the Mongols abandoned the province. The next turn, the Mongols invade, castrate my king and his forces and conquer not only the territory that I had previously took from them, but also the province of Poland as well. Needless to say, I was fooked.
