    Default Resizing photos ??

    Hi everyone

I wonder if you can help me with a small problem.

I have just spent 2 weeks in Tenerife and have taken plenty of pics on my new digital camera. I want to upload them to a website I have subscribed to but the maximum size allowed is 1 Meg and these pics are nearer 2 Megs.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

What image/photo editing software do you have, if any?

Download the GIMP (it's free). With it, you can resize your photos, compress them, edit them, whatever.

If you have adobe photoshop, do the following, as it will reduce file size, but unfortunately picture size.

*Click on the 'Image' button at the top, inbetween 'Edit' and 'Layer'.

*On the dropdown box click 'Image Size...'

*The box that comes up should be easier said than done - just type in your measurements.

And here's one i made earlier, resized down from my native resolution of 1440x900 to 800x500. If i kept them at 1440x900, their file size would be absurdly big.

How are people managing to send me JPEG pics of themselves that are in 100's of KB's when I am in the 1000's?

Is it because I am using a digital camera (higher quality)?

That, and possibly because they've resized them?

    Hello again

I've just found the ACDSee for PENTAX 2.0 lets me edit or resize the pics. I've let it do one automatically and it resized it from 3072*2304*24b to 800*600*24b. This moved it from 1.95Mb to 103Kb.

I've now uploaded it to the website and will check how it looks once it has been authorised. At least I can alter it as needed.

Thanks for your help for pushing me in the right direction.

GIMP, hands down. Xiahou has it right.

I just switched from fourteen years of Photoshop use to GIMP because the overhead on Adobe's products has just become too much.

One minute startup times begone, along with all sorts of annoying behaviours. It's light, very fast, and does most of what PS can do with no problem.

For every standard photo manip, GIMP is definitely equal to PS -- it has all the nice options: auto levels, colour curves, deformation filters, etc. Plus, if you want to do extensive processing or batching, its scripting engine beats PS's for usability by a mile (1.6 km )

    Highly recommended.

If you just want them resized to quickly show at others just use Paint
