Sometimes, when I'm besieged, I rush through the gate with my knights to destroy the enemy's siege machines. However, the gate stays open even after my knights are returned to the base. How the hell do I close it?

Try to move your troops further away from the gates.
Sometimes this won't help, and the doors stays open. Once I was besieging the enemy fortress, and their reinforcement entered through the gates, leaving them wide open during the whole battle. They didn't stay at the gates, they ran straight to the central plaza.
I didn't take advantage of it because I already punched a few holes in their walls.![]()
Don't post men to close to the gate. You will need some distance between your men and the gate.

If you have any units near the gate move them a bit further from the gate. The gate might be thinking some of your units wish to pass through it.

It is especially annoying when the enemy knocks down the walls on the both sides of your gate and you rush your troops there to plug the gaps only to find out that it opens the gate!![]()
I wish we have a "close the gate" button somewhere.

Its just poor AI for me!
The worst is when you lead a cav charge and they get stuffed and wave the white flag and then somehow get stuck in the gate-way for goodness sake![]()
What's even more annoying is that the enemy AI doesnt protects its siege machines, just sends them way out ahead on their own to attack your walls, making them vulnerable to a quick sally by your knights.
So i've got to impose yet another rule on myself (i.e. to not do that), to at least try and make the game a bit challenging.
In Rome, gates sometimes were closed after holding all nearbuy units...
Why? Historically, besieged people used to rush to destroy the only things that could have taken down their best defense quickly. History is full of overconfident/stupid people who don't guard their siege engines well, too.Originally Posted by Daveybaby
Oh, did that happen at every siege throughout history, without fail? I hadn't realised. So your argument is that the AI is programmed that way on purpose to provide historical accuracy? Oh dear.Originally Posted by Namealreadytaken

Hmm... if the AI was programmed to emulate the most stupid Generals in history, that would explain a lot.![]()

Another reason the gates don't shut is because one of your cavalry (most likely your captain or general) has got himself glued to some piece of siege equipment that he was trying to destroy and is fighting for his life.
Or a unit has stopped routing in the gateway and is awaiting orders.
Or the gateway is so narrow that the unit has bottlenecked and one or more has got glued to the outer wall.
(Pathfinding around gates is notoriously patchy)
