Thread: What happens when you get excommunicated?

Default What happens when you get excommunicated?

Besides the possibility of having a crusade against one of your cities, what happens?

Within a few turns, I'll have the catholic nations down to me (Venice), Purtugal, and Poland. If a crusade is called on me, I can take them down.

But in order to take down the remaining factions, I have to go against that stupid pope BS of refraining from attacking.

Do I lose money or anything?

You get a public order penalty in your settlements. Your relations with other catholics might take a hit but I'm not sure about that. Not a big deal really if you are planning to take them down anyway.

As said you get a public order penalty of 20%. Other factions can attack you without having to worry about the pope and about their reputation. There can be crusades called upon one of your regions.

It's really not recommended for some factions. For example if playing venice then getting ex commed is probably loosing the campaign ( vh/vh ) but if you are England... then it really doesn't matter much IMO.

Best way to go is stop fighting when the pope tells you too, he'll say the same to your opponent, and the AI usually keeps fighting you so he gets excommed instead of you.

Can I go send an army right outside of the other factions' city?

If they attack me and I kill them, I don't get penalized, right?

A good tactic is to try and call a crusade to another faction a few turns before you think you'll get excommunicated. That way there won't be a crusade against you, since there must be a few years in between crusades.

Also, not always will you get excomm'ed when the game tells you you might if you attack a faction. In fact, in my last campaign as Spain, I never once got excommed, even when I did very nasty things to the other catholic factions. Probably because I had a tribute going for the pope for 1500 per turn, and was cranking out cathedrals in all my cities.

Also, if you don't have the 'thou shallt not attack' quest from the pope, if you can take a settlement in one turn (so without sieges, so you'll need catapults and the like), you can't get excomm'ed (at least in my experience)... since the pope will give you the quest to cease hostilities the turn after (and then you already have the settlement, so you're fine).

Morale; getting excomm'ed does have serious disadvantages (like the others in the thread pointed out), but if you can play around getting excomm'ed in the first place.

That's not always true. Once, the Pope ordered me to cease hostilities against the French; I obeyed, but the French attacked me on their next turn... and I got excommunicated.

Make him warn you about one of the remaining factions, and then go smash the other one. By the time you're done, the warning will have expired and you can go back to the original. Rinse and repeat until there's only one faction and the Pope left, then crush them both.

Really? Wow... I've never tried that, because I assumed that warnings from His Hatness would be concurrent and overlap. If the game is programmed so he can only focus on one faction at a time for this, then A) it's a great exploit, and B) a real flaw in the strategic AI programming. Once you've attacked a fellow Catholic faction, the warning should be "how dare you!, stop at once, and don't even think about attacking another Catholic faction."

But that doesn't mean I won't try it, if it works. At least once.

If you have GOOD relations with His Pointiness, the mission penalty for failure will be "Your relationship with the Pope will suffer" instead of "You will be excommunicated"

No, you can get repeat warnings for multiple factions. At the height of it, I had warnings to stop fighitng 4 different catholic factions.

Right now, it's just me (venice), Poland, and Portugal.

Poland's fighting the Mongols and Portugal is about to crumble. After that, I'm going to make the pope my b***h.

Sorry, yes, you have to rotate between faction warnings instead of being exempt from them after one warning. My point was, the warnings don't stack; i.e. 'Don't attack Venice anymore' has nothing to do with your war against Poland. By the time you've racked up enough destruction to get a second warning, however, the old one should be nearly gone (Aren't they usually 7-10 turns?).

    The number progresses.

At first it was 2-4 turns, then it was 5-6 turns. I got one for 7-8 turns.

I just build a fort right outside their settlement and just chill. They usually attack and their reputation drops and I can kill them with no repurcussions.

If they are in your territory or sieging you, you can attack them without penalty.

If you are in theirs they can do the same.

If you attack them in theirs, you fail.

    Vice versa.

So defensive wars fine, aggressive no.

Man, never get excommunicated. The public order in your settlements go down cause they are Catholics and they cant seek forgiveness for their sins when the nation is excommunicated. Its like being expelled from your faith.
Your generals loyalty probably goes down as well and other factions may war with you cause the pope won't stop them.

If you get excommunicated just sit back and absorb the attacks of othe factions if they war with you or resume with what got you excommunicated.

i thought i remembered that when your ex-comm fraction leader died, the fraction would be restore back to Catholic faith, aka at low (1?) point with Inquistors having a field days, randomly burning the heretics and characters.

works if the pope died too. you can "assist" the pope to appeal to the higher authority personally by having the high level assassin.

    This is correct.
