Easy to fix: Hit Shift+1 while you have that chunk of units in a group together and highlighted. That makes it so you can string them out in a single line, as long or short as you want it.

I agree what happens when you group formation the AI will keep the same shape I.e the same number of ranks regardless what formation you want them in. you need to disband the group before you can do this.
