Thread: Foot Soldiers

    Default Foot Soldiers

I have modded my rtw to exclude cavalry units in campaign mode.

Is there any tips for killing infantry and missile with infantry and missile?

I play on medium as with only the generals bodyguard on horse back I dont want the AI to have the +4 or is it +7/8 on hard or very hard settings.

    Thankyou

Why would you want to reduce the depth of the game by taking out cavalry ??? Beats me...

As to the bonuses that the AI gets on Hard or Very Hard settings, well, it needs it, and by taking out the cavalry the enemy infantry would still get this bonus. So, in fact, you didn't solve the "problem". Enemy peasants would still get the +X bonus.
Even on Hard you can still get 10 to 1 kill ratios or higher (10 enemy for one of yours) by simply employing superior tactics than the AI.

Well, with regards to your original question: infantry on infantry just turns into one big slug fest. Put your slower/tougher infantry in the center to hold the line while faster, more nimble infantry should be on the flanks acting as flankers, essentially fulfilling the role of cavalry. Put your archers behind your main infantry line, while your skirmishers should be in front harrasing the enemy, or on the flanks doing the flanking. Use the terrain to your advantage, hills, forests, tall grass etc.

Still beats me why you'd take out all cavalry, although, I must say that I really enjoy playing cavalry heavy factions.

You seem to have misunderstood me, I know that by taking cav out I will still be against +4/+7 AI

Te reason I took out cav is that the "anvil" technique is far too easy and tempting.

And I don't really care how much rep you have please do not patronise me, however subtle you think you are.

This may seem a little harsh as your:

Was of use to me, I am a fair person and I thank you for that.

I didn't mean to offend you in any way whatsoever, unfortunately text doesn't carry emotions that sometimes go with it. I was just generally surprised about the fact that you've taken out cavalry. Add to that my great liking of cavalry factions and you get =)

I can add more info regarding the infantry tactics. The lack of cavalry would mean that those pesky enemy archers would be a great pain in the royal buttocks as you wouldn't be able to chase and kill them with light cavalry. Essentially, this means that you'd have to either use: (a) longer range archers; (b) exploit the high ground or even possibly the combination of the two.

It also really depends on which faction you are going to play, if the faction doesn't have solid infantry, then you are in trouble - your main infantry line would buckle in minutes when faced with concentrated pressure that the AI puts on a weaker segment of the line.

Well, when I come up with some more ideas, I'll add them here.
    Cheers.

I think in this style of game Ie all infantry I would use much deeper formations for the front line keep the archers back with flame arrows. WHat I think is the most important part is knowing when to send in your reserves. This IMPO could be the turning point to any battle. use the heavy infantry to check the enemy advance and then smash them with fresh reserves, also this brings the skirmisher into play as you no longer have to worry about them being killed by cav so you can push them far ahead of the main battle line and begin the harassment early flanked by your general so if the enemy gen decides he wants a peice you can have the little Busterds on your mantelpeice

This advice is very good, I am still early in my campaign so mainly what I am using is around 4 - 6 Hastati's with 1 - 2 Velites and 1 - 2 Generals.

What my technique was to pilum the advancing infantry with Hastati/ Velites, engage with Hastati's then flank them with more Hastati leaving them a way out when they rout so my general(s) can stretch their horses legs.

If you don't like cavalry, you'll probably like Inca Total War. It's about the Inca, Maya, Aztecs, and other Native American Tribes vieing for power shortly before the Spanish arrival. No cavalry, since there never were horses in the Americas.

I followed the link. Where can I download it from? It looks right up my street. Although are unit cards the same as rtw?

Not out yet, sorry (forgot to say that >_>). We're short on Skinners, mostly. Hard to find good skinners, sometimes.
