Thread: Godly horsemen of Arabia.

    Default Godly horsemen of Arabia.

OMG...the Sabaean 'medium' is so powerful it's almost scary. I have
heard that Arabian horsemen are very skilled, but this is ridiculous. They beat down diadochi hetairoi and parthai cataphracts with such ease!

I even routed a 2000-man army with 4 companies of Sabaean 'medium' cavalry.

They shouldn't be named as "medium cavalry" like the average podromoi or bihentin. They are more like "elite heavy cavalry" or something.

Are you sure it wasn't because of some very poor morale or something similar in the other army, or some great bonuses you had in yours?

I had a full-star general accompanying the cavalry. Does that count?

If you had a full star general he probably had a lot of morale improving traits....

The difference between medium and heavy cavalry in EB can often bee fleeting. I believe Brihentin and Galatikoi Lavotuxri are officially classified as heavy rather than medium cavalry.

Even so they have basically the same equipment as the Sabaean Citizen Cavalry. An unarmored horse, chain mail, a cavalry spear and shield. Plus that wonderful longsword as their secondary weapon.

In addition the Sabaeans have the advantage of the Arabian bred mount. Which is both fast, agile and has very good stamina. The horsemen themselves are classified as hardy and elite. Which means good fighters with good morale.

Yes it's true they can often beat "heavier" cavalry. I've seen them eat Hetairoi for breakfast. They may have a slightly smaller charge bonus compared to the Hetairoi that use the Xyston lance. But once they get bogged down in a melee, the Kopis just dosen't stand a chance against the Arabian longsword.

Gallic and Galatian 'knights' are classed as heavy cavalry. It's a relative thing; they're certainly not as heavy as cataphracts, but compared to other Celtic and most of their neighboring cavalry, they're veritably tanks; good mail armor, good helmets, sword, spear, good charge, good morale, etc.

I'm guessing it's primarily two things really. One, the AP of the kopis doesn't really matter all that much against the Arabs who rely more on their shields and defense skill, so the rather gross difference in lethality value becomes more telling. Two, the AI is an idiot and doesn't know how to use secondary weapons in the first place; I've chopped Grivpanvar to bits with even fairly light AP-armed troops thanks to this, as the kontos just plain sucks in extended melee and doubly so against practically unarmoured opponents, and the AI doesn't know how to pull out the swords which would serve them by far better...

The Sabaeans are toned down in the next release too.

I meant the citizen cavalry. The Sabaeans will be ever cooler as a faction.

Nope. They needed the space for more generic units. The Sabeans are getting less. Not more.
