You can't really say FATW is historical, it probably depicts Middle Earth very well I can't really judge as I don't know that much about it, but Arthurian: Total War seems pretty historical to me at least all those kingdoms existed and appear in chronicles and stuff like that AFAIK.

BI was a great game to me. I remember when I first played it, it was a big shock after RTW, but I came to like it. Main difference to me is that RTW had a more bright, polished 'finish' which made it seem more civilised, whereas BI had a more rugged, dark coat, and it was (at times) quite a come-downer. Could have been I was having a bad day, but it reeaally pissed me off at times.
As for IB at first I thought it was awesome, but it became much too easy for me. I defeated 6,000 goths with 1,500 men, and only lost 150. Keep that in mind, but don't let me stop you, since the people who made IB did a great job of historically portraying the things in the game.
BTW-if you play it as the Western Roman Empire, get ready for a shock. A big, Germanic, 4 stack shock

I loved Invasio Barbarorum so I recommend it . The WRE is way harder in it that Vanilla BI . If you want an easy faction play as the ERE or the Sassanids . You will destroy anyone with them nearly .
