Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    German is easy

Those who know Latin and are used to the derivations, can easily learn it.

This thing is actually mentioned by almost all of the German teachers at every start of their courses. Then, they continue with studying some odd words like "der", "die", "das", "den", etc. In the end, it must be reminded that it is such a logical and simple language.

To explain all that we have affirmed, let's take a practical example. Firstly, buy the "German Language Book". It's an awesome volume, with covers made of carton, published in Dortmund, which tells us about the customs of the Hottenttots (auf Deutsch: Hottentotten). In the book it is told how the kangaroos (Beutelratten) and caught and imprisoned in cages (Kotter), covered with a cloth (Lattengitter), which protected them from the rain. These cages are called in German "cages covered with cloths" (Lattengitterkotter), and, when they contain a kangaroo: Lattengitterkotterbeutelratten. One day, the Hottentots arrested an assassin (Attentäter), accused to have killed a a Hottentot mother (Hottentottenmutter), having a silly boy with talking problems (Stottertrottel).
Such a female is called in German Hottentottenstottertrottelmutter, and its assassin is a Hottentottenstottertrottelmutterattentater. The assassin is captured and it is locked for a while in a kangaroo cage (Beutelrattenlattengitterkotter), but the captive escapes. Immediately, everybody goes searching the fugitive and, suddenly, a Hottentot warrior returns yelling:
    -I've got the assassin (Attentater)!
    -Really? Which?
    -The Lattengitterkotterbeutelrattenattentater.
-What? The assasin in the kangaroo cage that is covered with a cloth?
-Well, the Hottentottenstottertrottelmutterattentater (The assassin of the Hottentot mother of the silly child with talking disorders).
-Oh! You should have said from the start that you caught Hottentottenstottertrottelmutterlattengitterkotterbeutelrattenattentater.

As you can see, German is a simple language. All it needs is a little patience...

Actually it is quite straightforward as all you have to do is merge the words into one. Really all it is is a bunch of genitives back to back. It is a bit like Lego, you can make words as long as you like by just adding more and more genitives to the front.

Yes it could be a word, even though you won't find it in any dictonary. The thing is, that you can create new words by adding two or more existing words. That is the reason why German was so popular among scholars until the middle of the 20th Century. It allowed them to describe new aspects by creating new words.

    To our Hottentotten-potentaten-gross-tanten-attentats-versuch

    Hottentotten are an African people
    Potentat is a ruler
Tante is aunt, and Grosstante would be grandaunt
Attentat is asissination and Attentatsversuch is tried assisination

But no one (except for laywers or legal texts) uses words of that size, at least not seriously. It would be: "Das versuchte Attentat auf die Grosstante des Hottentottenpotentaten".

Pfft. German huge words are just words stacked together. I'll up the stakes with some elementary Finnish: The word kalastajamaisuudettomuudellansakaankohan (translated meaning: by the act of not resembling a fisherman [with an integrated indirect question and extra uncertainty]) is derived from the root kala (fish) only by using suffixes.

In the book it is told how the kangaroos (Beutelratten) and caught and imprisoned in cages (Kotter), covered with a cloth (Lattengitter), which protected them from the rain. These cages are called in German "cages covered with cloths" (Lattengitterkotter), and, when they contain a kangaroo: Lattengitterkotterbeutelratten
This is the worst Ive ever seen.

-"In the book it is told how the kangaroos (Beutelratten) "
Kangaroos (german "Känguru") are not Beutelratten. Beutelratten are stuff like opossums (sp? definitive SMALLER than a Kangaroo).

    -"Kotter"
I am not a very uneducated person, but what the hell is a Kotter, never heard it.
Normally you call cages "Käfig", and by thinking about it, it seems to be the only word for cage in german (except "Transportkäfig/gehäuse/karton).

    -"covered with a cloth (Lattengitter)"
A Lattengitter is usually made of metal, or wood. It is e.g. used at baby beds, so the little kids dont roll down the bed or get away. So no cloth, this would be called "Decke" or "Tuch" ("blanket" - I use babelfish for this word, cause I dont know it in english - or simply "Cloth"

-"and, when they contain a kangaroo: Lattengitterkotterbeutelratten"

For this you would have to make a full sentence.
"Ein Käfig, der mit einem Tuch bedeckt ist, und eine Beutelratte/Känguru beinhaltet."

I would really like to see this book in RL

Default AW: The new unit card project teaser.

An Attentat is not necessarily an Assassination. It can be a try as well.

I also wondered about the "Kotter". What the hell is this?

A Kotten is a rural house.

    Kötter is someone living there.

A Köter is an unpleasant dog (literally "shitter").

Köttel are small, hard pieces of poo.

    koten means "to leave excrement".

The only word with appropiate meaning that came to my mind is Gatter. But that's very far from "Kotter". Normally you would say Käfig, which implies it's secured with a Gitter. So the normal word for a cage with a kangaroo would be Kängurukäfig. That's it. The longest real word coming to my mind right now would be Bundesverfassungsgerichtsentscheid, verdict of the Federal Constitutional Court.

Bartixische segmentpanzergerüstete Brandschweinwerferflugkataphraktkamelreiterberserkerin. I would consider that possible.

It's amazing how you guys take a silly joke, apparently hastily made up to pun on the long compound nouns of German language, such seriously as to criticise it. So, how about this one:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The History of the English Language

Copyright (c) 1994 Corrie Bergeron and Ben Tucker all rights reserved
This has gotten copied and reproduced all over the place, including Oxford's Merton College. But this is the original. Enjoy!

In the beginning there was an island off the coast of Europe. It had no name, for the natives had no language, only a collection of grunts and gestures that roughly translated to "Hey!", "Gimme!", and "Pardon me, but would you happen to have any woad?"

Then the Romans (who had a pretty decent language) invaded the island and called it Britain, because the natives were "blue, nasty, br(u->i)tish and short." This was the start of the importance of u (and its mispronounciation)to the language. After building some roads, killing off some of the nasty little blue people and walling up the rest, the Romans left, taking the language instruction manual with them.

The British were bored so they invited the barbarians to come over (under Hengist) and "Horsa" 'round a bit. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes brought with them slightly more refined vocal noises.

All of the vocal sounds of this primitive language were onomatapoedic, being derived from the sounds of battle. Consonants came from the sounds of weapons striking a foe. ("Sss" and "th" for example are the sounds of a draw cut, "k" is the sound of a solidly landed axe blow, "b", "d", are the sounds of a head dropping onto rock and sod respectively, and "gl" is the sound of a body splashing into a bog. Vowels (which were either gargles in the back of the throat or sharp exhalations) were derived from the sounds the foe himself made when struck: AAY! EEEEE! III! OH! OOH! and sometimes, "Why?"

The barbarians had so much fun that they decided to stay for post-revel. The British, finding they had lost future use of the site, moved into the hills to the west and called themselves Welsh.

The Irish, having heard about language from Patrick, came over to investigate. When they saw the shiny vowels, they pried them loose and took them home. They then raided Wales and stole both their cattle and their vowels, so the poor Welch had to make do with sheep and consonants. ("Old Ap Ivor hadde a farm, L Y L Y W! And on that farm he hadde somme gees. With a dd ddhere and a dd dd there...")

To prevent future raids, the Welsh started calling themselves "Cymry" and gave even longer names to their villages. They figured if no one could pronounce the name of their people or the names of their towns, then no one would visit them. (The success of the tactic is demonstrated still today. How many travel agents have YOU heard suggest a visit to scenic Llyddumlmunnyddthllywddu?)

Meanwhile, the Irish brought all the shiny new vowels home to Erin. But of course they didn't know that there was once an instruction manual for them, so they scattered the vowels throughout the language purely as ornaments. Most of the new vowels were not pronounced, and those that were were pronounced differently depending on which kind of consonant they were either preceding or following.

The Danes came over and saw the pretty vowels bedecking all the Irish words. "Ooooh!" they said. They raided Ireland and brought the vowels back home with them. But the Vikings couldn't keep track of all the Irish rules so they simply pronounced all the vowels "oouuoo."

In the meantime, the French had invaded Britain, which was populated by descendants of the Germanic Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. After a generation or two, the people were speaking German with a French accent and calling it English. Then the Danes invaded again, crying "Oouuoo! Oouuoo!," burning abbeys, and trading with the townspeople.

The Britons that the Romans hadn't killed intermarried with visiting Irish and became Scots. Against the advice of their travel agents, they decided to visit Wales. (The Scots couldn't read the signposts that said, "This way to LLyddyllwwyddymmllwylldd," but they could smell sheep a league away.) The Scots took the sheep home with them and made some of them into haggis. What they made with the others we won't say, but Scots are known to this day for having hairy legs.

The former Welsh, being totally bereft, moved down out of the hills and into London. Because they were the only people in the Islands who played flutes instead of bagpipes, they were called Tooters. This made them very popular. In short order, Henry Tooter got elected King and begin popularizing ornate, unflattering clothing.

Soon, everybody was wearing ornate, unflattering clothing, playing the flute, speaking German with a French accent, pronouncing all their vowels "oouuoo" (which was fairly easy given the French accent), and making lots of money in the wool trade. Because they were rich, people smiled more (remember, at this time, "Beowulf" and "Canterbury Tales" were the only tabloids, and gave generally favorable reviews even to Danes). And since it is next to impossible to keep your vowels in the back of your throat (even if you do speak German with a French accent) while smiling and saying "oouuoo" (try it, you'll see what I mean), the Great Vowel Shift came about and transformed the English language.

The very richest had their vowels shifted right out in front of their teeth. They settled in Manchester and later in Boston.

There were a few poor souls who, cut off from the economic prosperity of the wool trade, continued to swallow their vowels. They wandered the countryside in misery and despair until they came to the docks of London, where their dialect devolved into the incomprehensible language known as Cockney. Later, it was taken overseas and further brutalized by merging it with Dutch and Italian to create Brooklynese.

That's what happened, you can check for yourself. But we advise you to just take our word for it.

@Bootsiuv - the best tabletop is to have my laptop with the cards in a Word doc open on the desk behind me. With a wheeled, swivel chair on a wooden floor for maximum speed, I swiftly rotate, tap the mouse pad, scroll the doc and check the stats. Can do it blindfolded in under 3 secs! ;-)

I was actually thinking more along the lines of a tabletop card game that could be played using all of these nifty cards. I haven't figured one out though. I was thinking of maybe making some location cards, which would have things like woods and snow, so certain units would be better in certain locations, etc., etc.

But I haven't really dwelt on it any further....more of just an interesting thought as I looked at them and thought about the good times I had playing magic.

Theres nothing better than constructing a deck that beats everyone else's time and time again. I remember I used to have a few combo decks that would kill a player in 1 turn. My opponent would be winning, and making fun of my pointless deck that hadn't done any damage to him yet, and then I would lay down that last card and simultaneously advise him to 'suck my wand'. Good times.

I have thought about it and played around with some ideas. The main problem with any game like that is balance and that might not be easy to get right. Which would mean there is such a thing as a 'killer deck'. We would also need cards that depict events and whatnot.

As for the battle, basically my idea was to have 6-8 'lands' that separate both players. They would each start maximum distance away and units could move one land per turn (cavalry two). Missile units could fire (we somehow need to convert range into number of territories).

When units meet they become 'engaged' and can no longer move. Subsequent units could reinforce the line or attempt a flanking maneuver (gives bonuses, allows charging).

You would then compare attack against defense + some random value (roll a dice?). The loser takes one 'hit'. Each hit reduces the unit size by 20 men and morale by 4 attack by 2 and defence by 2 (say). Units that have 0 men 'die'. Units with morale < 0 rout.

    Something like that.

Those are some great ideas, really. At least I'm not the only one who has contemplated such things.

Even a highly balanced game like magic can't avoid having a 'killer deck' in every type II league (the league that uses cards from the latest sets only). Don't even get me started on type I (the league that uses ANY card, save those that have been banned because they're too strong).

It is inevitable that their would be a 'killer deck', but at least it would take a while to figure it out, considering we would probably be the only people in the world who play the EB CCG.

I might dwell on it further. None of my friends play EB (all a bunch of 360 users, although my brother is going to get my old comp when I upgrade, so I'll try and get him into it), but at least I could play this game with them, and give them a little taste of just how cool EB is.

Let the record show that I am an incredible dork.
