Unzip, I don't know many free programmes, I use WinZip, but I heard 7zip or something like that also works very fine.

    So, unzip and open!

Interesting overhaul and complete translation overhaul which is in part sadly not correct-at least by the translations i have at hand..
But i still see no unit of wolf or bear-warriors
I thought this decission was made a long time ago, or is the unit list not complete and you hold a "special" unit back?
Bear and/or wolf-warriors should definately be in.
    And...
    @blitz
You surely know that long flowing hair was "reserved" for the nobles with the notably exception of the chatti youths. I see many units with those hairstyle, so what is the reason for this?

It was prompted by Hooah's request, I thought I'd respond in the same language. And Dawn of War is excellent, particularly with Dark Crusade.

God, I hated dark crusade. Was it just me or did it get rid of cover? Personally I would have gone the other way: playing winter assault with the imperial guard was a fantastic exercise of moving from cover to cover.

Think it was just you, there was definitely cover, but in varying amounts depending on map. Also, you couldn't create more of it the way you do in Company of Heroes. That game seriously rules.

Not to get even more off topic, but I've heard quite a lot about CoH lately. I haven't tried it yet, but if people keep saying it rules, you guys just might force my check-writing hand into action.

    Looks great as always guys.

Just one point, I don't know what's going on with the videos I download, but sometimes they're pretty choppy. I was playing them with VLC, then that was choppy/freezy, so I tried winamp, that was okay for a couple, now that's doing the same thing, so I tried windows media, same thing.

I watch a lot of movies/TV shows on my computer, and never really have this problem with anything else.

    Just a heads up.

  16. #46

yes the Huscarl from out of the Middle Ages got the axe.. but eventually should be replaced by a 2-handed clubman variant Bernoz (ON Bjorn) which means "Champion" and "Bear" and will hopefully tote a bear-skin

someone mentioned the Celto-Germanic spearmen, no they were left as is graphically, thus why they aren't on the list, although their name now is all 1 language and match sweetly with the Germanic spears:
    Gaizoz Frije (One's own/Free Spears)
    Gaizoz Alje (Foreign Spears)

ok, what translation do you think is "sadly" incorrect? I hope the basis isn't the fact that it's not High German. what resource do you have "at hand"? was it published anywhere near 2003 as the one I have A Handbook of Germanic Etymology by Vladimir Orel? I have had to bust ass to pump out so many names, it's amazing how much wasn't done, anyways, so I'd be happy to correct anything that I might have overlooked, especially anything based in morphological evidence throughout Germanic cognates.

the bear and wolf warriors were not completed in time for the 1.0 build, but they should hopefully make it into subsequent builds, but there is a huge debate and skepticism keeping them from being implemented, despite great artwork by Blank for 1 (because he gets stuff done before they're approved- he's that good! that's not really sarcasm- Blank is that cool). the Cimbri regional cavalry also will not make it into 1.0.

What is your source for "flowing hair was 'reserved' for the nobles"? AFAIK, the only reason any units currently have flowing hair currently (besides the Chatti youth/"unproven" who are referenced by Tacitus) is for style and variation. What should they have, all Suebic knots so they're all the same, even if they aren't Suebic? Or would the flat-tops of the old "Hearth" be better? It doesn't make sense to remove helmets from units just to see their hair, so unfortunately we don't have many options. We know from sources such as the the "long-hairs" of the Goths and Franks that long hair was abound, never heard of any specific hairstyle-enforcement except maybe the Chatti, which by the way Tacitus phrases it, most of them chose to do it, so lazy / less proud Chatti didn't even do it. I'm open on this, so please enlighten me.

    [edit]
ok, I found a quote from one of my favorite books that is reminiscent of what you're saying concerning hair:
"The Origo Gothica of the sixth century still remembered the Gothic leaders of the the early period, the generosi, as a stratum that it falsely equated with Getic-Thracian nobility of the pilleati. These reges of Getic prehistory were in fact subordinated to an authority clearly resembling the Tervingian judgeship. Ulfias's reiks and Cassiodorus's Gothic kings personify the upper stratum from which the Origo Gothica distinguished 'the middlings' (mediocres). In the sixth century these are called 'the long-haired or curly-haired' (capillati); their equivalents are the free men of the biblical Gothic, the frijai, who were described in the fouth century as 'hair-shaking' tribal warriors. The hair (skuft) of the Goths was bound into a knot. Even the princely warrior on the Pietroasa bowl sports the same hairstyle; his rich hair is tired in three knots. Comparable to the Gothic 'curly-haired' are the Vandal Hasdingi, before the name was monopolized by the royal family of the Vandals, after the fashion of the Merovingian 'long-haired' kings. The contrast between Goths and Romans emerges from the Gothic verb kapillon, which in the Tervingian 'military slang' meant something like 'getting a Roman haircut,' so that the Goth wore his hair (capilli) in the Roman manner" (102-103) Herwig Wolfram. History of the Goths.
"We know the name of honor of the Gothic freemen from their songs: they were called the 'curly-haired or long haired ones' (capiillati)" (Wolfram 301).

Obviously from Wolfram's point of view, the freeman had "long-hair," so that doesn't really mean anything in a roster full of freemen. My question is this: what else should it be? Surely Roman haircuts shouldn't exist in 275BC for the Sweboz. Are you saying it should be bound, even though it is invisible under the helmet?

There are changes pending on almost every faction. Deciding not to play the Sweboz because a few items are still on the docket is like refusing to drink a draft beer that's 2% less full than another. Except in this case, you don't even know whether the Carthage Beer has more volume than the Sweboz beer (and it doesn't).

Hold on blitz, that was just a comment - you don't need to see this as an attack.

I will find my sources about the long flowing hair and as you surely know the suebian knot was not reserved for suebian tribesmen only. The question is not long hair or not, but free flowing hair. Germanic free men surely had long hair, but from my sources only nobles let it flow freely. Had to do with religious aspects as well. The franks and goths are a little bit out of timeframe though. I never suggested to remove the helmets by the way. There are several other hairstyles with knots-it doesn't have to be the suebian one.
About the translation you should know by the work i've done that i didn't use high german, so i'm not sure what you want me to say with this comment.
Discussions about wolf and bear warriors?
Sounds irritating, as all people who learned a little about germanics b.c. agree with those totem warriors.

Hi SaFe. Wolf and Bear units of some type or another might be seen in 1.1 (hint hint).

I got tired of literature and thus Paullus and I based all these units from the archaeological data available to us. Note that our analysis was conservative, in that the sources for most units come from 350-150 B.C., therefore not allowing any later developments to influence the thinking.

There are no Franks or Goths... what exactly are you referring to?

Safe, I find this an odd comment.
Lots of germanic units made under your command also had long flowing hair...

I've read more books and descriptions and talked a lot to several archaelogical members of the Ladenburg castell since the time the units were first created - this was 2005 - long time ago.

I will take a look at my books and give you/blitz the data, but this is not so important.
If you want them with long flowing hair so leave it that way.

    @Urnamma
Nice to hear about the wolf and bear warriors.
I really can't imagine those units are disputable.
