    Default Broadband through the phone?

we have started getting broadband through Orange because they are discontinuing their 56k dial up service and have replaced it with their broadband, but here is the confusing bit it goes through the phone line, as I am not home at the moment it was explained to me by my mum thus. “it is at a higher frequency than the human ear can hear” that’s fine but my problem is this I was under the impression that a phone line could not hold more than 56k which is why you have dial up and broadband separately, and to have broadband you need a separate line. So could someone explain to me how this works or confirm that this is complete and utter rubbish.

o and I must point that surprisingly it doesn’t work and am getting no help from the call centre.

Got it, it sucks, I get 20kb/s of those 4Mb/s when I am lucky, and it is very unstable.

I have 3000 Mbit/s and tests typically give me 2700, so I'm content about ADSL.

ZombieFriedNuts, if you want to have some fun with your parents, tell them that talking too loud or shouting into the phone will affect your Internet connection. Next time you hear your mom on the phone (if she's really loud, like my mom is), tell her that she just killed your internet connection and ask her to talk more softly. This doesn't work if you can't keep a straight face.

@ currywurry - You have a definite problem then if that's your connection max, even to those speed test sites. Call your ISP and tell them to fix it, you aren't getting what you're paying for.

Methinks someone is getting confused about their megas and kilos...

Whacker - there probably is something wrong, but we're stuck with Tiscali, who have the worst customer service in the world. We would change, but we're moving to Australia at the end of November so there's not much point getting a new ISP.

I'd like it if my ISP provider did the same mistake, though unfortunately DSL does supposedly not support such speeds.
