    Default Pay Pal

    Howdy,

Does anyone know if Pay Pal is reputable and safe? I see it all over the place but have never used it.

    Thanks.

I've used it whenever I pay for something online, and its always been secure and good for me. It's a secure website, as said by the lock, and if someone scams you or it doesn't work I think they pay you some insurance stuff or something. I'd say its okay.

Thanks. It's only for a small amount, but I don't like giving out the Visa to just anyone.

Paypal is the same company as ebay IIRC.

Well you could set up a paypal account that is funded by the Visa. From what I've been told it's the safest way to use paypal. As if things go sideways you can just get Visa to reverse the payment. And with CC funded paypal they other guy doesn't ever see your card number. The money just comes from a paypal email address.

According to wiki it is a fully owned subsidiary.

I have used PayPal many times, and it is particularly good on eBay. Very secure and safe.

eBay bought PayPal some time ago.

I've never used them but my dad has, seems safe in general, never heard any complaints.

Just to reaffirm what's been said above - it's perfectly safe. My dad is a complete safety freak when it comes to payment over the internet, but he uses paypal without thinking because it's so reliable.

The biggest securiy risk with paypal is the users themselves. There are a lot of spoof emails sent out that mimic paypal ones. These redirect you to a fake site and try to manipulate you into re entering your details, including password and bank details. Basically paypal or ebay (or your bank etc) will never contact you via email for this kind of information so you should treat every email from any of these sources with 100% suspicion.

Well, you shouldn't even regard it with suspicion, you should just immediately delete it.

Indeed, though by "sources" I was referring to ebay, paypal etc, and that emails from these should always be treated with suspicion. It may be genuine ebay or paypal correspondece but it very often isn't. Especially if it's warning you about security or asking you to enter personal details.

A common one is where you're informed that someone has been using your account and you must log in and perform "verification".
