As for "who does that anyway", and "when would you ever need to do that anyway", well, leaving aside that those are not the right questions to be asked, I'll answer them with an example: I did, last weekend, because one of my hdds seemed to be on the verge of dying, and I had to copy everything from it onto another hard disk.
When you're afraid your disk will fail any second now (which was my case, because, as I'm sure many of you have noticed, quite a few such situations involve a gradual, but rapid deterioration of the device), you do NOT want to spend many hours to copy folders piecemeal, and you do NOT want to reboot your machine every now and then, giving yet more opportunities to the failing device to crap out on you.
So while you might not do this every weekend, when you do do it, you really want and need it to work properly, because there's usually a lot at stake.
