    Unhappy Buggy Installation for v1.0

I had no problems at all downloading or playing v.81av2, but with v 1.0, its been nothing but a pain. Before I installed v1.0, I deleted everything from the earlier version including R:TW itself. I completely did a complete reinstallation of R:TW with 1.3 and 1.5 patches. I then downloaded v1.0 from Filefront. I followed the instuctions and I also rebooted the computer after installation. When I launched a game, the EB intro screen came on but after 2-3 minutes, the screen would go black, the music from R:TW would start for a moment then stop. The EB music would kick in while screen remained black.
After 4-5 minutes, the loading bar would appear and when loaded, the EB settings (options) screen would appear with nation icons / world map from following screen kinda of merged some what together and the screen would be flashing/stuttering. I tried setting my options to the lowest settings, thinking it my help, but nothing changed. I continued on into starting a campaign to see if the rest of the game was impaired, and had a ctd. I've uninstalled everything and started over, but the same thing happened again. I used a bug eliminator program, but that didn't fix anything.

Try opnening the properties screen of the EB shortcut on your desktop (right click it; click properties) and add -nm to the target line. See if that works.

Thanks for the quick reply Tellos. I did what you said and was suprised that it worked until I actually tried to get into a game, then I had a ctd. This is what my target line looked like.

    "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - EB\RomeTW.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm"

Can I ask what "-nm" did and why is stopped the video stuttering?

Well -nm is a short for "no movie"; so you'll guess what that did to the "video stuttering"...

Some ways that other people have overcome installation problems:

*install from scratch (you did this, didn't work)
*download a map.rwm file (search the forum, you'll find it)
*delete some interfering files that Vista hides in its bowels
*Install using 7-zip rather than installer

You can also run the EB installation validation to see what is different in your installation, and use FileMon to see what it is doing at the moment of crash.

I am using Windows XP, not Vista

I deleted the map.rwm file, didn't stop CTD. I even installed a new map.rwm file that was mentioned in your CTD solutions; that didn't help either. I can get into the start-up windows but when after I choose my country I start a game, I get a CTD still.

    So that means you've done

X Install from scratch (didn't work)
    X Download a map.rwm file (didn't work)
X Add -nm to the shortcut (helped, but didn't work anyway)
_ Delete some interfering files that Vista hides in its bowels
_ Install using 7-zip rather than installer
    _ Run the validation tool
_ Install the fixes linked in my sig

Correct? Please try the other ways.

Ok, I have windows XP so I don't think I have to worry about Vista.
I've downloaded 7-zip but don't know how it works.( Yes, I tried to figure out how it works but I suffer from bouts of computer illiteracy) I also downloaded Procmon and followed the instuctions and pictures shown. I would get procmon going then start EB, once EB got to the "Choose nation" screen and I chose a nation, I got kicked out but no longer to desktop. Once I got kicked out, my computer started rebooting. Twice I ran procman and then EB and twice I ended up rebooting. You guys must have completely redesigned the game to have so many bugs and CTD's.

Maybe you still have EB files in your registry?

4 down, 3 to go. When did I ask you to use Procmon? If you want to use such a tool, Filemon is the thing as you have XP.

I advise you to try the validation tool currently.

To use 7-zip: Run 7-zip. Choose [B]Open[B] and find the EB installer. Select Extract and point it to the RTW directory where you want EB installed. Wait until it's done.

Ok, I've installed 7-zip into the RTW directory. Now what? Sorry, I'm somewhat computer illiterate, I play the games, I just don't program them, so I'm trying hard to understand what you want me to do. What do you mean also by validation tool? Where do I get that?

You should have installed 7-zip in another location, but no matter for now.

    Now run it.
Find the installer where you downloaded it to, in 7-zip's window.
Right-click the installer to open it, select 7-zip=>open archive. Then you should see a file structure inside 7-zip's window.
    Click Extract.
Copy the path where you have installed RTW from a Windows Explorer window. (yes, you need to find it here too...)
Paste the path you just copied into 7-zip's dialog.
    Click OK.
    Wait until done.
Modify the shortcut that a previous EB installation made to point to the folder where you have currently installed the RTW you're using for EB.

Now. If you have any problem understanding this very detailed list, ask very specific questions about what is unclear. I am quite computer literate, and therefore take a lot of knowledge for granted that you might not know, so you'll have to help me help you.

Hello Bovi, I'm trying to follow your instructions, but since I've never used this stuff before, I'm a bit confused. If you could post step-by-step pictures of what I need to look at that would be great, but I know you are a very busy person so I'm not expecting it. I removed the 7-zip file from my Rome:TW file and stuck it on my desktop for the time being. I've opened up 7-Zip File Manager to where I have my game installed "C:\Program Files\Activision\RomeTW-EB\". How do I take a screen shot and send it to you to show you what I'm doing? Sorry for the inconvienance.

You can take screenshots by pressing the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard.
Open Paint (it's in the Accessories bit of your Windows start menu) and paste into it using Ctrl-V.
To reduce its size, select only the relevant part of the screen using the rectangle selection thing, then copy this selection using Ctrl-C. Get a new screen with Ctrl-N, then paste it with Ctrl-V.
Finally, save the image somewhere on your disk. Use JPG as file type, to further reduce file size.

Then, to post the screens here, you need to upload them to an image hosting service such as https://imageshack.us and copy the link they give you ("direct link"), finally pasting that when using the picture button in this forum (the icon with the mountains).

Phew! Anyway, you say you navigated to where you installed RTW. This is not correct. You need to navigate to where you stored the EB installer.
