Wink Historical Documentaries for EB Players/Fans - "The Ancient Warriors:The Spartans"

    Hello, EB Comrades!

I wanted to share History Channel Documentaries with EB Players.
The First Series that i am going to cover is called "The Ancient Warriors."

I am sure all of you EB Players are going to enjoy this documentary.

I will keep uploading another interesting documentaries in this great EB Forum ( Want to be a "member", not a "junior member" )

This Ancient Warriors series from the Discovery Channel is an excellent look at the warrior groups and armies that shaped history.

Each half-hour episode looks at a major fighting people or force and charts the reasons for their rise to dominance and subsequent fall.

The warriors highlighted are: The Assyrians, Celts, Normans, Legions of Rome, Macedonians, Soldiers of the Pharaoh, Spartans, Janissaries, Huns, Knights Templar, Vikings, Highlanders, Irish Warriors, Maurya Warriors of the Elephant, Aztecs, Samurai, Shaolin Monks, Hawaiians, Ninja, Sioux.

There are 20 episodes and almost all include re-enactors hacking and slashing at each other with great abandon. Some are better than others but, overall, the series is first-rate.

The scripting is good, filled with interesting detail, and each programme follows one soldier and his life in the army. Not all of them end happily, it has to be said.

People who are interested in warfare throughout the ages - or the specific warrior groups themselves - will appreciate this series.

Interesting videos...but keep in mind that the history channel portrays Polybian era Romans soldiers during the 2nd Punic War as wearing lorica segmenta armor, that Roman armor can stop a ballista bolt, and they portrayed Attila the Hun & Genghis Khan as blue eyed Caucasians...

I'd take everything the history channel says with a grain of salt...

    Agreed.

But regarding the Roman armor...I have a friend who saw this demonstration with his own eyes. Not at the filming of this on the history channel, but at his university. In both instances the lorica segmentata showed its worth, so I am inclined to believe this History Channel (and my friend) on this one.

I think the problem is that the lorica segmenta they used is made of high quality modern steel bands...instead of varying quality iron bands that the Romans would've used...

Not to mention the sheer amount of blunt trauma that would occur as the result of being hit by a ballista bolt.

Exactly. The steel plates might not break, but considering the armour quality then they could bend, and in any case you'd probably end up with a chestful of broken ribs and internal bleeding at the least.

    EDIT
Whoop. Iron plates, not steel. Thanks Intranetusa.

Yup, and also, the Romans used "iron" plates.

So would I, especially after seeing the pathetically biased/nationalistic Britain BC, despite its wealth of archaeological showcase.

I was gonna mention that the armor might have stopped the bolt but and energy will would still most likely occur .
