Default EB v1.0 constant crash to desktop, please help

I recently downlaoded EB v1.0 for the first time, and the game crashes before I can play. It takes a long time to load the main menu, which is fine since based on other posts is normal, but when the main menu screen loads, there is a big white box where the EB logo should be. White boxes also obscure any pictures on the menu, like those that allow you to return to a previous screen or auto detect your performance settings. This happened occasionally with RTW, but I was always able to fix it with a restart. Restarting does not work. I reinstalled RTW, then EB, then applied the permanent v1.0 fixes listed in another post, and no luck. I have one saved game, which was a result of the one time EB loaded successfully and I started a campaign as the Romani just to see what EB looked like. I uploaded that saved game, as per forum instructions, and the information is enclosed. Since that one time EB loaded without a problem, I cannot advance past the main menu screen without crashing to desktop. If I load the saved game or start a new campaign, I always suffer a long load time, with choppy music, followed by the crash during the load screen. Please help.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Here's a checklist you can go through to try to make the game work again. I suspect some Vista virtual store crap or file rape corruption that it appears to enjoy.

    X Install from scratch
    _ Download a map.rwm file
_ Add -nm to the shortcut
_ Delete some interfering files that Vista hides in its bowels
_ Install using 7-zip rather than installer
    _ Run the validation tool
X Install the fixes linked in my sig

Correct? Please try the other ways. Since you crash when starting a new campaign, I don't think your savegame will be any use.

Thanks for your quick reply, Bovi. I still haven't had any luck. When I have more time this week I plan to start the whole process over again, just to make sure I haven't missed a step. As a sidenote, I am using RTW Gold Edition (which was mentioned in an earlier forum as being incompatible with your validation tool, and I found similar results; when I ran the batch file the list of broke/missing files was huge...I don't know how helpful that will be) and I am operating on Windows XP service pack 2, not Vista. And when I start RTW, I have no problems.

I will post again after I give the whole thing another shot (hoo boy), but if you have any further advice or suggestions, or if there is anyone else who has experience with this [common?] problem please feel free to let me know. Again, your help is greatly appreciated.

Post it here and I can see what to make of it. Possibly I can even update the validator to cope with it.

My advice is to do the stuff mentioned in the checklist. It has helped many so far. Normally just one of them was needed.

    _ Download a map.rwm file
_ Add -nm to the shortcut
X Delete some interfering files that Vista hides in its bowels

My bad. I was referring to an earlier post where someone has a very similar problem to me but I misread the thread and you have made changes to the validation tool since.

I reinstalled both RTW and EB, once with Windows Installer and once with 7 zip, added -nm to the shortcut, deleted the map.wrm file (but did not d/l one, not sure what to look for), installed the permanent fixes, etc (I think that rounds out your checklist), and it still crashed as I was starting a new campaign each time. I ran the validation tool and these are the results:

You seem to have a corrupt install. There are changes to files, or some are missing.
However, these may be conscious changes you have made, to remod EB. See below for details.
    ==========
    Missing file: .\data\packs\patch_1.pak
Changed file: .\data\credits.txt (expected checksum 632aad51f3a61c5da34140e4fa28800b, got b0a7954002857cc32e253a5e08b5c194)
Changed file: .\data\descr_items.db (expected checksum 05785f752f89ae7f82ffd4631ddafd2c, got 244bf4dbabea7646706611eaeabe6d56)
Changed file: .\data\export_descr_advice.txt (expected checksum f29c56a6d711e3ebb70b855365500de8, got 97794093b86abe2d5ebab1920b9c3363)
Changed file: .\data\fmv\atvi_spinning_logo_640x480.wmv (expected checksum 7e15895ba7a723535f55e4deb91c085b, got e9ac1729af2fdeffe8365a567cd76b23)
Changed file: .\data\menu\splash.tga (expected checksum a57cc84af0e6c1300577336f17e0bfd6, got d1329cf835f69e6dff4b4cc0cb08d144)
    Added file: .\icon.ico

Based on your checklist I'm not sure what to do next. Even though EB is not yet working, I do appreciate your time and effort. Can you look at the validation results and tell me if you know how to fix this?

    Thanks again!

It seems really similar to someone else's validation report. I recall having made an archive with the files that were missing, and I think that was the last I heard of him so assume it worked, but I fail to find the post again. Perhaps you can search this subforum for it, otherwise I can probably make such an archive for you tomorrow night, going to bed now. Please bump this if I haven't posted again in 24 hours.

BTW, you mention the permanent fixes. Please try the temporary ones too. A couple of people had problems with the oasis in 0.8x, I'm sure it's the same for 1.0.

Thanks I'll try and look for that. Assume that I haven't found the files and am still having problems unless I post otherwise. Thanks and have a good night!

OK I'll do all the fixes.

Btw if RB crashes to desktop, the next time I load EB all of the background images in the main menu and faction selection menu are replaced by a pure white screen, even if I reboot. I don't know if you assumed that was the case but I didn't want to leave anything out, in case it was pertinent.

    Thanks.
