Thread: Guys PLEASE leave Unit Size = Default when hosting games!

    Default

It REALLY bogs the heck out of my computer to a level at which the game is unplayable if the Unit Size is set to Large or Huge.

I see usually 1/4 to 1/3 of the few games that are being hosted have unit sizes set to something larger that Default and I automatically know I can't play in those games.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this as anyone with a system similar to mine or slower would suffer the same problem trying to play on your hosted games.

    Thanks.

    ps my system is 1.3Ghz tbird, 512mb pc133, GF3ti200 64MB.

JRock, your specs aren't much less than mine (mines a 1.5Ghz but the rest is the same) and I've got it running at 1152xwhatever very smooth and large unit sizes. Have you tweaked your graphics settings at all?

To get mine to where it is, I did the following:
    1. Latest drivers (I guess you tried this, it didn't do much for mine either).
    2. Installed DirectX 8.1 (the install said I was up to date)
    3. Turned off anti-aliasing
    4. Set PCI texture memory size down to 5Mb.

I couldn't believe the difference. I wasn't going to do anything because the gameplay was ok (but not great). Now I'm glad I did.

On my GF4 I find the game has chronic problems with Antialiasing. I can play any other game with AA on max, but MTW battles grind along with very poor performance.

Turn AA off, it doesnt affect MTW graphic quality that much anyway.

    AA is off.
    DirectX 8.1b is installed.
I dropped PCI texture memory a while ago when I heard that might help.
I have fairly recent NVidia Detonator drivers.

    Dunno what else to try.
I'm only running the battlefield in 1024x and if unit size is anything more than Default in a 2vs2 or 3vs3, I get a slideshow and the mouse is unusable.

i have almost the same specs as you, 1.0 tbird though, runs fine on mine, to a certain extent that it. 5000 units + starts to get pretty chunky.

It hard locked my system again earlier so I went and grabbed the latest VIA 4in1s as I remember that always solves hard lock game bugs (AGP miniport driver or whatever comes with it).

So far so good. Still laggy as hell in big battles or when unit size is jacked up.

Bump to remind people not to set unit size to Large or Huge. Every extra man on the field bogs your system a little more, and those of us on lesser systems won't be joining your games.

You could try lowering your soundcard's hardware acceleration under the sound tab in dxdiag program?

My mate did this and it worked wonders for him.
