If you mean the Saxon's English Huscarls unit then I can't recreate your problem. HRE is already set up to use this unit in the vanilla files. All I had to do to have them in custom battles for HRE was change the ownership line from:

ownership saxons

to

ownership saxons, hre


To get them in the campaign I added:

recruit_pool "English Huscarls"  2   0.5   2  0  requires factions { hre, }

to one of the buildings. HRE already have the unit icons etc set up in vanilla.

edit: re-reading your post maybe it is a kingdom's related thing. I don't have it so i don't know what the differences may be but the above worked fine in vanilla 1.2.
