How to conquer the Sahara?

I wonder how I can conquer the Sahara without cheats?
Did anyone conquered it?

AFAIK, you can't since it's a closed region. You can't access the area were the city is.

And why would you take the place? You planning to stop the expansion of the desert by planting lots of trees?

The desert is kind of like the ocean. You can claim it and have your guys patrol it, but it will never be completely yours. And it will never change to your color.

If I own all of the territories surrounding the ex-Arabia province, I just consider it as part of my empire.

I remember reading somewhere (the FAQ maybe?) that the game places a lot of buildings in the Saharan settlement to track game progress, so taking it causes nasty things to happen
