Thread: I've given up on this mod...

  1. #1

Default I've given up on this mod...

I have never ever seen such an unstable mod in my life. I've spent the whole day installing and uninstalling because the mod won't work. It takes an hour to extract the installation program, then an hour to install. And when it doesn't work it takes another hour to uninstall. And repeat the process again with no success.

Every time I try to start a new campaign the game just crashes to the desktop. So I spend another hour downloading different fixes and patches and try it once more and it doesn't work. This is absolutely stupid.

I'm laughing, yet crying at the same time. Congratulations, Mr. Durian. You have succeeded in extracting an absurd emotion from my psyche.

Try reading README's or FAQ's or detailed instructions posted everywhere you turn right here on these boards and on the official EB website, even ones with pictures showing you exactly what to push and when to push it. Installation authenticators even exist to make sure your copy of RTW is ready for the experience that is, EB.

    Use your head.

Sorry to hear that. What are your computer's specifications? If it's taking an hour to install, EB might outside of the scope.

One of the most un-stable mods?

Sorry that really made me laugh.

EB is easily one of the most stable mods I've ever played....I've only had one ctd on 1.0. and that was immediately following the Pahlav intro video ().

You should realize that EB does require a certain level of computer to play....an hour is a long time. Mine installed in about 10-15 mins IIRC.

Try getting more ram, but I guarantee you that thousands play this mod everyday, and it is quite stable. Therefore, you should check on your end for the problem, perhaps that will lead you in the right direction.

    @Bovi

Have you guys ever compiled a minimum system requirements? I'm just curious, because I was wondering what the min sys req's were.

The part that ticks me off is when file is being extracted from the archive just prior to installation.

And therefore you made a fresh, clean 1.5 RTW and used 7-zip instead to install, since that is faster. Or? I can't help you as long as you don't say what you've done. Not that you appear to want help though, just thought I'd try a last time to come through to you.

Bootsiuv, no, we haven't compiled minimum system requirements. Many who have less than 1GB ram have problems, but then comes along this other guy who says he's running it just fine on 256MB. Anyway, the minimum requirements are subjective. Do you find it acceptable to wait 5 seconds between turns? 30? 2 minutes? 30? An hour? Do you have to be able to give orders and see them executed immediately, or is it okay to press Ctrl-T and wait for 4 seconds to see if the game got the order to slow down again (I did this, a long time ago)?

Sounds like the checking integrity thing?

Could be a corrupt download. Bovi would know much more about this than me though.

Have you tried redownloading the mod, perhaps from a different mirror?

There are also repair files someone made available IIRC.

Sorry I don't have better answers.

BTW, your comp can definitely play EB, with some frills like clouds and campaign shadows turned on, no less!!

To those who say EB is a "stable" mod, I can gladly point other mods that are 100% lighter and far more stable. EB is much more like an over-bloated and delicate Leviathan that makes many computers lag terribly and crash due to the excessive use of system resources. Yep, it's great, but definetely not the best in stability terms so far.

I had several CTDs, on vanilla, BI and EB, bitched, and my bro-in-law chided me for buying an ati card. He told me to update my driver. I did, It stable now. End of story.

My personal experience is that NVidia drivers are way, way more unstable than ATI's. I had to run on drivers from a year and a half back for any sort of compatibility on my crappy old card (which was definitely not an old card at the time). Upgraded to ATI, took the latest driver => instant stability.

EB is relatively stable if you can feed the enourmous creature it really is with lots of system resources: memory, processor speed, video card, etc... I've got a lot of lagging and CTD's because it reached a point where my computer just couldn't get enough resources from anywhere. Apart from that, relatively few systems here have enough resources to run EB without lag, especially the last 1.0 version.

BTW, I have 1GB of RAM.

Nvidia drivers suck, I agree. I own three games right now that can only run if I remove my current driver and install an ancient one instead.

See, that's strange, because I have 756 MB of ram with a 2.7 gig processor, and I've gotten forty years into a campaign without any problems

Now I understand why Bovi and the rest of the team didn't compile a min sys req's....who the hell knows?

Have you tried reinstalling Rome completely? Or just EB?

Sorry if you said that already, but I would recommend starting with a fresh install of RTW v1.5 if you haven't already.

Aside from that, I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, as I've experienced no problems.

My gut feeling tells me I am talking to a poor sould who hadn't come across Bovi's treasure of a signature...

Seriously: if you suspect that the issue may be part of the mod you could try to see if Bovi's links turn up anything. If it's about a CTD prior to loading your first campaign this may be due to the fact that we re-enabled movies so to play the Pahlava intro. Some people experience CTD's because of it; but the majority doesn't.

This too seems to be user end-related; and in fact many of the GFX oddities such as snow capped trees in Arabia; weird & ugly sprites seem to stem from RTW's basic incompatibility with some (NVIDIA) GFX cards (and drivers). ATI users rarely ever seem to have such problem; or they simply don't post bug reports about it.

Okay, back to my gut feeling at hand:
-You could try an search for how to turn the movies off again; but basically it's a matter of adding "-nm" (without the quotation marks) to the target line of your EB shortcut.

Besides: it'd be insane to download everything un-compressed; file by file. And chances are one or two files would end up getting corrupted in the process-- no, it's much safer & quicker to use an archive.

Cool Re: I've given up on this mod...

Too bad you cannot get EB to work. Since I reinstalled EB without BI the only CTDs occur after I have been playing for more than 2 hours and also had one during battle. I have no complaints though.

Dunno if this is relevant, but for a while I had a "game CTDs upon loading" problem too. Eventually the issue turned out to be something right stupid - the RTW patches themselves needed to be uninstalled, so they could later be reinstalled properly into the clean install... the 1.3 patch at least was like that.

Once I did that, the game started working without problems.

Wonder if it's the same problem here ?

Mr. Durian, I'm very sorry to hear that it still is not working. What you are describing sounds very much like a video card problem rather than an installation problem. If you have not done so already, I highly recommend updating the drivers for your video card, particularly as some GeForce cards with older drivers appear not to be interacting well with EB.

It would very much help us track down this problem if you could give us some step-by-step feedback as to what exactly is happening. I understand that you just want to get in and play, and I sympathize with the frustration of a game that just won't work for you. However, the more we know, the more likely we can figure out what's going on, get you up and running on EB, and ensure this doesn't happen for other folks just like yourself.

Please take a look at Bovi's thread and go down the checklist of things you have tried so that he can suggest what steps to take next.

Before you proceed any further, we really need to know what operating system you have. Windows XP? 2000? Vista?

We also need to know what base type of RTW you are trying to use. RTW? RTW: Barbarian Invasion? RTW Gold Edition? RTW Alexander?

I think this will work in all three of those, but - could you go to the directory where you have installed EB, right-click on the folder called EB, and select Properties? Once you have done so, wait for the properties menu to count the files and the file size. After that, write down the total number of files and the total file size. Please paste both numbers here so we can verify that EB installed correctly.

Have you tried bovi's Installation Validator mentioned in this thread? If not, please go try that now and let us know what the results are.

We can't help unless we get more info, so please do what you can to fill in the gaps for us.

    Thanks!

I think it was not mentioned that by some odd circumstance, a few people got their EB 1.0 working by replacing the file map.rwm with another one that they got somewhere else. Before uninstalling anything, try that one.
