Thread: Vista problems

    Default Vista problems

Believe it or not, I am still having problems installing EB 1.0. I have a vista, which I understand maybe causing the problems. I have heard that other people have found traces of RTW elsewhere on their computers and delted them. Could someone who has done this please tell me where you found those files? Thanks.

I like CCleaner, it has some other general cleanup functions as well.

My only persistent problem that might be related to vista is that the print screen - paint action for saving images from in game does not work, in place of the image it only shows a black picture

This is related to anti-aliasing settings. Lower your AA or turn it off and it should work

    Question Re: Vista problems

Love EB, but will wait on a patch that might fix the Vista issues, I just inherited this laptop and it has vista, will try to download it on my desktop at home(which maybe 2 weeks from now) which has XP before I say good or ill of EB1.0, But the vista issues need to be hammered out.

There are no issues with Vista and EB that can be fixed by the EB team. I've been running EB on Vista (internal betas and 1.0) with no problems. Make sure you run Windows Update as there have been quite a few compatablity patches for Vista and make sure you have the newest graphic card and chipset drivers.

The two things that I've done to make Vista more responsive overall is turning off UAC and (most importantly) turning off indexing...

I still can't even get RTW to run right on my new vista cpu. And I bought the damned thing to play and work on EB with.

See if there is anything in C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Totalwar. I had problems with this when I tried to upgrade to 1.0, and everything worked fine after I deleted this folder. It seems like it is just temporary wierd stuff that makes trouble, and isn't needed to play the game.

    Hope this helps.

I am using Vista x64 without any problems. I installed a gold edition RTW
The saves folder is found at:

    harddisk:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\EB\saves

harddisk = letter of install drive
if you made a copy of your vanilla RTW for EB installation, look for \EB\saves in your_path_to_RomeTW.exe, where your_path_to_RomeTW.exe means the path to your copy of the original RTW game files (where the rometw.exe can be found)

RTW did and does not use Microsofts recommended place for game saves etc. So there are no files of RTW in "MyGames" or c:\users\username\appdata\local (local low / roaming). EBV81av2 had an entry in roaming.

I myself had a minor problem installing EBv1 when I tried to install it when I had EBV81aV2 still installed (in a different folder). The installer gave some error (I do not remember what it was). After deinstalling both EB and making a new copy of the original RTW files, installation did succeed without an error.

I cleaned every single RTW file off my cpu, reinstalled RTW 1.0, and the damned battles still CTD - even simple ones. I have no idea what to do and the people at the .com have no worthwhile advice to offer ("turn off background apps, etc.") All drivers have been updated as much as they will allow. So incredibly frustrated...

I know you checked if it were 1.5, I had got mine up and running, but I get that black screen up, which I have to do a control-alt-delete and then hit cxl 1-3 times and then I'm fine, played for 17 hours yesterday, nothing going on, why not. maybe you need to reinstall?

Vista is a painful step backwards but don't use registry cleaners... use regedit.exe as long as you know what you're doing. And sometimes it's fun to delete random keys to see how Windows will behave!

Have you guys by coincidence got ATI Radeon X700 cards? Teleklos reports that he got it working better by changing stuff in the "driver program", I hope you know whatever that means. One setting that seems to be causing the problems mostly is called "Support DXT textures format", under the "Direct 3D Settings".

Well that's easy to find if you've got indexing turned on (by default it is, so no need to explain how to do that...): simply go to search > advanced search > specify to search system drive only (C:\) > type ATI in the search field. You'll find a map called ATI Technologies (and in my case ATI.ACE\Core-Static\ is the subfolder in which I can find my GFX setting-manager... (CCC in my case))

EDIT: In my case the setting Bovi described is listed in the CCC program under 3D\API Specific\ >> it's also where you can find your OpenGL settings.
