That has nothing to do with it, it just keeps the unit sticking to the rank and file instead of spreading out pushing foes.
True, the "militia hoplite" types (Greek, Carthie, the Saba urban spearmen) have a bit looser order than the regulars. To compare:Code:"Militias": formation 1, 1.2, 2, 2.4, 4, square "Regulars": formation 0.76, 1.2, 1.6, 2.4, 4, squareProbably not enough drill. They're still in general terms in rather close order compared to most infantry though.
