Thread: EB's campaign map runs extremely slow.

  1. #1

Default EB's campaign map runs extremely slow.

I've noticed that, when playing EB it takes nearly a minute for the A.I to move right after I end my turn, while vanilla R:TW and M2:TW's campaign runs drastically faster. Now after lurking quite a while on this board I've noticed that people mention that the Sea Graphics Switch mod might improve speed. So, my question to you guys is, how exactly do I install it? When I click on it, it gives me a bunch of text! Do I copy and paste it over a folder?

    Answers are appreciated, thanks!

The answer in one word: Script.

In many more words....the EBBS Script is an 11 MB .txt file. That's enormous. Really, really enormous.

First of all: the Sea Graphics switch is a Placebo. Yep you heard it. Placebo. Nothing more, than that. People who suddenly experience a drastic performance boost ... well they are imagining things so to speak. But if it makes you happy...

Anywho: the Switch is available through the downloads/misc section of the EB website; and it should come with a brand new mod_0 or mod_1 .pak file. You should replace the other, corresponding .pak file in your EB directory with the Placebo effect and you'll have your Vanilla Seas back.

    ...
You're right ... I do not notice some major performance improvement. Better turn off the music (though it's a shame) and campaign shadows and minimize/turn off all the other graphics.
Towards the end of the book, the Moties quote an old story from Herodotus:

"Once there was a thief who was to be executed. As he was taken away he made a bargain with the king: In one year he would teach the king's favorite horse to sing hymns."
"The other prisoners watched the thief singing to the horse and laughed. 'You will not succeed,' they told him. 'No one can.' To which the thief replied, 'I have a year, and who knows what will happen in that time. The king might die. The horse might die. I might die. And perhaps the horse will learn to sing.'"

Nearly in a minute? That's Linford Cristie style mate why are you complaining?
I'm running a 5600 Ath X64, 2gb ram, and a 8600GT and my turn times are about the same (probably a little less actually, 30secs, about there?). On my old rig was looking at maybe 2-3 mins, the one before that maybe 10-15 mins.
Changing stuff like campaign map shadows etc will only help with framerates when you're actually on the map, not when your computer is processing the AI turn AFAIK.
As far as load times go...not much you can do, as has been said the big hitter is the script which has a silly amount of stuff to check through every turn. The only real thing you can do is make sure your computer is running as fast as possible.
    Cheers

I've been wondering, but if you played EB 1.0, and never ever activated the script, what would happen? I know reforms and whatnot are apart of the script, so those would never fire correct?

I'm guessing it would basically become vanilla RTW with EB graphics and units, but I do not know for sure...

Even worse than that. For example, the script places the correct government buildings for the AI because the RTW was not coded for that concept. So, without the script, if the AI would not raise them by accident or because there is nothing else left to be build, the AI factions would hardly be able to raise any higher level MICs, and the corresponding units, or better buildings.
