Thread: Another stupid question, also about 300 (dont kill me)

Default Another stupid question, also about 300 (dont kill me)

I know how most of you seem to hate people who post about 300, but i have a question. If (as Leonidas tells the cripple) the Spartans fight in the phalanx formation, then why dont they have sarissas? they seem to use smaller, hoplite spears, and they dont really form like weve seen the phalanxes in EB do, ie, pikes in front, raising up to ward off arrows. hoplites or a simple mistake?

-Thermopoly occured BEFORE the sarissas were invented. So those are out of the question.
-Spartans ARE hoplites, they fight like hoplites NOT phalangites (which by the time Thermopoly did not even exist).
-The movie 300 DID NOT portray accurate Hoplite style of fighting.

Thermopoly occured in 480BC. Phillip II came up with the sarissa (or should I say improved) in 360-350BC. MORE than 100 years later.

Yea and I think Spartans wouldve used their spears even if Sarissa was around. Those Greeks thought Sarissa is cheap since they are able to stab people 6 M away..

Yes, it's a silly question. When you see the Spartans repel the first Persian assault with locked shields that is the phalanx. The pike-phalanx is different but they work in a similar way and therefore are named the same.

I read somewhere a long time ago that some British guarded wanted to check if his Kevlar works...he asked some hobo to stab him with a knife....the guard died...hmmm

Most of the time in 300 though, the Spartans just ran around randomly with their swords and cut people's limbs off... that shows the importance of the phalanx clearly

And Caesar should have worn steel plate mail and have dual-wielded katanas

Yeah, that movie looked beyond ridiculous to me... I am glad I didn't see it. I did like Gladiator and Braveheart though, but at least those movies didn't have mutants

There are two basic forms of phalanx, not including variations (eg the Germanic "phalanx").

You have the Greek hoplite phalanx.

And then the Macedonian pike phalanx.

Obviously, the Spartans in this movie are using a (stylised) version of the former. "Phalanx" really just refers to a dense formation, not the exact equipment used.

So forget what the RTW game has told you about phalanxes. The phalanx ability in the game ONLY refers to the Macedonian-style phalanx and doesn't take into account the Greek-style phalanx (which the game wrongly depicts as a smaller Macedonian phalanx - corrected by EB).

The phalanx is a tightly-packed group of men which doesn't always have to mean the typical Greek version. Caesar described the Gauls attacking in a phalanx and being slaughtered by pila and it has generally been accepted that they were simply in a tightly packed formation which i suppose they were going to use to push the Romans out of the way.

Just a little point to add to the pike phalanx and "typical" Greek phalanx discussion.

Edit: God damn it, beaten by a few minutes. :(

Actually, Kevlar and other ballistic aramids are very good at protecting from slashing attacks. Loggers wear leg protection made from Kevlar to protect against chainsaw accidents. Piercing attacks can get through depending on the protection level of the vest but the depth of blade penetration will generally be reduced.

Caesar was stabbed many times, most of which would not have killed him, but there was one definite killing stroke ( stab?).

Being in Rome he would not have worn armor, especiallyin the Senate, unless for a triumph or some such event. He also refused to have his lictors with him, so he was pretty defenseless.

Yeah, well, if Vercingetorix had been a god in the sense of the Christian God, history would've been so much different... my point is that it's a pointless discussion really. (Because they could still have stabbed Caesar in his face!)

Anyway, this thread has fulfilled it's purpose, all questions answered. Let it die.

Any formation of heavy infantry -especially if it's a line -- epecially more so if aforemtioned infantry carries sharp pointy sticks- which speaks Greek and is from antiquity is a Phalanx.

The word is used as a way to refer to all heavy infantry formation(s) or to the entire core of heavy infantry an army would consist of.

I think the point of this quote is from a fashion perspective. Kevlar is much more masculine than a toga. If Caesar died while wearing kevlar we would still say: "Caesar is dead, but his humongous balls live on". Sadly, I can't translate that to latin...

I know, it was just the discussion about it that I thought pretty pointless and out-of-place, nothing else.

Going for the face makes it nasty... Caesars dying in the senate floor. Let him die with some respect at least. Gentlemen we are not killers!

Brutus said something like that. Well at least the last line.. So thats why Caesar wasnt stabbed in the face. If he was wearing some kind of body armour Rome wouldve been much better.

rome would have had its civil wars & creasy emperors either way. It was bound to happen.... Generals funding, training, housing, and leading their own armies. And Emperors inheriting power WITHOUT any regard to thier capabilites as leaders and governors. Wtf do u think that leads to?????

Nah. If there was no other way to kill him than by stabbing at his face, they wouldn't have cared. Perhaps they'd just strangle him instead? So perhaps it was better that he had no armour, so he could keep his "respect".

    Dont you just love Brutus?

But IF Caesar didnt get assasinated...

    -Parthia probebly get conquered
-Whole Anthony vs Augustus wouldnt have happened
    -Germany conquered? Maybe
    -conquere ze world? Maybe
-Oh and dont blame Caesar for the screwed up first lot of Roman emperors. Augustus is the one to blame. (Tiberius was alright.. Caligula bad, Claudius so so, Nero.. ouch)

I dont know. Who knows. Perhaps Legions vs Samurai battle might have happened

    If he had body armour
    Consipirators: Die Caesar!!
Caesar gets stabbed in the stomach
Caesar: Oh thank god I had body armour..

(Ads) "Roman body armour!! Only thing that can protect you from damn conspirators! Only 1mnai!"

    Conspirators: Wait Caesar!!
Caesar: Suck eggs! No more forgiving for you.. Just coz I slapt with your wives...

Ok how did we get to Persia from Caesar?
