There are two basic forms of phalanx, not including variations (eg the Germanic "phalanx").

You have the Greek hoplite phalanx.

And then the Macedonian pike phalanx.

Obviously, the Spartans in this movie are using a (stylised) version of the former. "Phalanx" really just refers to a dense formation, not the exact equipment used.

So forget what the RTW game has told you about phalanxes. The phalanx ability in the game ONLY refers to the Macedonian-style phalanx and doesn't take into account the Greek-style phalanx (which the game wrongly depicts as a smaller Macedonian phalanx - corrected by EB).
