I’m about to start a KH campaign, and I’m wondering what a historically accurate army would look like. Of course it would be hard to create as precise an army as one might for the SPQR, but I’m just looking for a general idea. Thanks for your help.

It would vary according to the region and period, but some examples:
Peltastai and Thureosphoroi operating on the flanks of heavy hoplites along with some lonchophoroi, thracians and cretans for the wealthier polis. The Spartans would use mainly hoplites supported by cretans, and later on pikes would take the hoplites' place.
The Aetolians would be more often based on skirmishing tactics, until they reformed into a heavy hoplite phalanx later on.

Well, one is clearly implied while the other is not.

I don't think either of you are implying anything, Neospartan just meant that any ballanced army would be fairly historicaly accurate, as long as it is ballanced, ie. not full of elites, like he said.

Well since the KH lasted for a very short period compared to other factions in EB AND since I still cant find the source for the battle of Areus vs Antigonos...
I say that the KH is the best faction to do a "fantasy" roster, but based on historical and accurate guesses. 20k infantry, 5k light infantry, and 4k cav. Use the scale you want, but you may now by now that accurate numbers are mostly for historical battles.
Also I think armies based on the enemy you are facing would be a good idea. More ekdromoi against "barbarian factions", thuepheroi or thorakitai against "Maks", etc.
Well, I'm sure a good general would adjust his army to what he faced. And no general will have ever faced the exact same circumstances as I, so I will do as your last paragraph says.

Sorry it is not in any way a historical army, but the one i am using as a template for in my current KH campaign.
None of the units are heavy/elite. 4 Units of phalanx, 3/4 slingers, 3/4 light hoplite or heavy javelin (i attach my general to this group and then flak with it), 3/4 units of Prodromoi (the most effective unit in my army) or med cav., and the rest are spearman (KH version of legion's rank and file).

You also might want to wait recruiting Thureophoroi and similar troops and let them fade in to your armies in the 250's.
