People want the prosperity that seems comes with skilled immigration. Skilled immigrants will have representative power due to the higher average income. The more immigrants there are, the more power they represent. Because of this power and the fact that the country becomes part theirs after they've lived there for a while, they don't want "their state" to have a State Religion at odds with their own. This really does make sense. People are trading cultural identity for fast track prosperity - which really makes sense if your cultural identity doesn't mean that much to you in the first place.

If it does, you're out of luck.

National divisions and ethnicity are arbitrary and Christianity did much better when it was persecuted anyway.

On the other hand, you could come to a middle ground and allow only immigrants who wished to adopt general cultural values (religion, patriotism, etc) into the country. Trade off a little economic prosperity. (most major western countries are already too far gone one way to implement this)
