You can kill anyone you see. I found this out by accident when I tried to stealth assassinate a guard and a random civilian walked by. I wasn't using the lock on and the stab decided to target her instead of the guard. Another time a fleeing woman stepped right into the middle of a swordfight and died.

Am I alone in killing the mentally ill people? The pushing and shoving has broken my cover too many times. Once one pushed me into a guard when I was trying to eavesdrop, and it took me forever to get back to being anonymous. I ended up having to kill most of the district's guards because I couldn't get sufficient distance to break the line of sight. Guards on the rooftops, guards around every corner, guards following me, patrols, more madmen tripping me up ... Nightmare.
What I meant to type is that I wish I could kill innocent people and stuff like that without having to worry about the repurcussions of being dyschronized.
I been killing innocent people esp. those blasphemous preachers who spread those lies about Saladin and the Crusades. Once I kill them, the crowd dispurses and go on about their regular lives. I do hate those mentally ill people, but I don't kill them I just tackle them or push 'em around.
I don't think those throwing knives work on your target, I believe the main assassination targets can only be killed with the hidden blade. Otherwise, it wouldn't cut to the memory scene where you put the feather in their blood.

Bob the Insane, that's my main tactic whenever I fight but it doesn't work if the person does a counter throw grab on you esp. the Templars.
    P.S.
I killed two more Templars today, makes 7 total for me.
Through the ages every weapon has evolved from two basic design philosophies, either a rock or a sharp pointy stick.

I've killed 4 templars so far and haven't even got any extra equipment. Haven't even killed the first target yet heh. I love this game though.

Got the 'Blade in the Crowd' achievement today, woohoo! Finally another kill which let me act like a professional. It was the book man. Very stylish; I only wish it were possible to do the same on every target.

Has anyone else spotted a killer version of the madman? I was wandering the rooftops of Damascus earlier today and I heard a guard scream. I turned the camera around and saw one of the mentally ill guys sprint away from a guard's corpse and jump off the side of the building. A bit later I heard a big crash followed by more screaming; a merchant stand had collapsed and crushed those nearby. Again I saw the madman running away. The guards went up to investigate, he punched one twice and ran off across the rooftops laughing. Lost track of him after that.

Finished it. That last section, starting from the beginning of the last assassination, was pretty dire.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Fighting. Endless forced fighting. With half your combat abilities disabled or nerfed into uselessness. Against opponents with 4 or 5 times the standard amount of health and who do 3 times the amount of damage. Fight at the funeral, fight on the road, fight before king Richard, fight Raynaud, fight your ex-allies, fight the assassination targets again, fight the old man and his 9 clones, fight the old man alone - argh!

Whoever decided to make the last part of the game so combat heavy needs a stern talking to, as does the one who decided to make those 'fun' changes to the combat system. Gah! They spent the entire game teaching you to do counter kills, guard breaks, acrobatic maneuvers, and then go and take it all away. Counter kills knocked the enemies down instead of killing them, guard breaks caused Altair to get hit midway through the animation, trying to finish downed guards cost half the health bar as nearby enemies hacked you in the back repeatedly, and to top it all off Altair was locked into a tiny little space by barriers so there was no space to work with. GAH!

The only good thing I have to say is that the checkpointing was very good. If you died not much was lost - mostly. :grinds teeth as she recalls the fight with Raynaud, the only part in the whole fiasco where she died, meaning she had to fight the very tough and dangerous group of goons over and over until Raynaud finally dropped dead on the 4th attempt:

Other than that I enjoyed the game.

I'm currently on Memory Block 4, just finished off the fat merchant in Damascus. I can't decide whether Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect is the best game I've played this year.

You regain equipment and abilities by completing the storyline missions. I do NOT suggest you tackle Templars until you get the Counter Attack move, as they will wipe the floor with you in combat if they spot you.

Heh yeah. 33/60 of them now. But I am on the final target.

And I agree 100% with frogbeastegg. One of my investigations (a stealth-orientated one from an informer) degenerated into mindless fighting and running every single time. I got it eventually though.

My enthusiasm for this game has gone down a bit now though. Maybe I played too much in too short a time but it seems to have gotten a bit repetitive. Also, how do I check what awards I've got. I'm sure I've killed at least one target "properly", but I can't remember anything flashing up.

    EDIT:
Am I alone in killing the mentally ill people?
No. Not exactly. I punch them in the face and they run away looking quite upset. But they are a huge annoyance.

Counter kills knocked the enemies down instead of killing them
I find with the more advanced enemies it is like that have multiple HP (like the Spartans in RTW)...

The first counter knocks them down and the second kills. Where as will the normal guards the first one did it...

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
As for the old man and his clones, I found normal attacking completely ineffective, by that point it was counter moves or nothing as he would counter any normal attack

Not having had my 360 very long I'm hazy on the precise scren names/details. Press the big silver and green button with the xbox 'X' logo on it to bring up the dashboard, press A to select the option it defaults to. That should give a list of the games you've played. Select Assassin's Creed from the list; in my experience it was always at the top. That should give a list of all the game's achievements. The ones you have will have a little icon and score, and you can see further details of any barring the secret ones by highlighting it and pressing A.

The guards came and attacked me whenever I tried that. They did the same when I got into fist fights with those thugs you can steal knives from. The loading screen voice lied to me when it said guards wouldn't care about fist fights. Stealth killings were easier to get away from.

Obviously I didn't discover that. Not the smartest of decisions on the developer's part, IMO.

I had no trouble with the old man. I found both step ->guard break -> hit, or counter->hit worked on the first go. He and the 8 targets were so easy I could not believe it was not a trick of some sort. "You thought it was easy. That was the warm up. Now here's 60 uber tough templars to kill. And a dragon."

You can punch or grab/throw anyone EXCEPT guards without the law going apecrap on you. Perhaps you are bumping into onlooking guards during the fistfight, or are accidentally switching to a weapon? I've only had one fistfight interrupted because I switched from fists to my hidden blade.

The only problem with fist fights is that the tough guys that you can pickpocket knives from will join in... I was always getting that in the interrogate missions...

Hey, did anyone get the "enemy of the poor" achievement from throwing beggers out of the way?

Definitely not. It happened more in the later missions, so my guess is that the guards' tolerance levels to fist fights were cut to near nothing.

Yes. I had to go far out of my way to get it, since I normally just jog past until they leave me alone.

I've got Enemy of the Poor. It's an amusing achievement, since I HATE those women who get in the way of your assassinations.

I've found that I can't get away with punching beggar women in the face, but it's totally ok for getting rid of the mentally ill guys.

Apparently the game does not advocate violence toward women. You lose a bar of health by chucking around beggars, but it's perfectly alright to get into a brawl with retards, thugs, and drunkards.

I managed to get Defender Of The People: Jerusalem by saving citizens of the city. The weird thing is that it's supposed to be given when you save EVERY citizen in the city. I still have one citizen left to save, and yet I managed to snag the achievement. Not complaining, but it's still weird.

I managed to finish Assassin's Creed. Good game, but a rental at best. There's almost no replay value, except to collect all the missing flags. While ramming my hidden blade into the gut of beggar wenches never gets old, the objectives do. Now, if they offered more than just not losing life when attacking civilians when you win the game, I might be more interested.
Back to Bioshock for me. A new 100p achievement and new Downloadable Content (new plasmids and tonics!) is worth a free download.

Credits are rolling right now. Hmmm, it tailed off really. Not really sure I like the ending. And these credits are way too long and I can barely read them.

Also, do I have to sit through that final cutscene + credits every time I load up the game now? Cos I want to get a few more flags, kill a few more templars etc.

EDIT: Ok, so the final cutscene +credits are gone but I just want to free roam now. Do I really have to sit through the intro to an assassination every time?

I can confirm that it does. It is a terrible port onto PC though (AC2 is even worse, I swear). If you have a console get it on that.

Ok so I got AC2, yet I have no idea how to run or jump. Or do anything really. Though fighting is smooth.
There is no tutorial, and Ive looked up how to jump but its no help. Im pressing high profile, yet I still cant jump or run, even when I press the button for legs.

You are playing it on the PC right? I can't understand why you're having trouble....you need to keep the buttons pressed for parkour, and press and release 'the legs' button (instead of keeping it pressed) to jump. However Ezio jumps and climbs quite fine when free running.
And you can see if mapping the controls to arrow keys and num ,1,2 helps (1 for head, 2 for hands, 0 for legs)...I wasn't used to WASD, so changing it helped a lot.

Thats the thing. The directions it gives to free run doesnt work. As a result, I cant do parkour either.
    This is getting frustrating.

Then that means you can't even run. And the tutorials are in the first mission in the first memory block. Just find Ezio's older brother and that'll start it.
