I'm a protectorate right now. Nothing happens. The game doesn't end, if that's what you were thinking. It is merely like a "better alliance" that comes with the added humiliation of being servant to the AI. But don't think that doesn't mean your protectors won't betray you.

I'm fairly certain they exact a hefty tribute from you, so it does effect your economy....I've become the AS's Protectorate as Baktria....they might not betray you right away, but it really doesn't stop them from attacking.

You would think that they wouldn't want to attack a subject state which was reduced to a tributary role....but that's the delightful world of R:TW diplomacy for ya.

Any remaining treasury you have at the end of the turn is shipped to your master. Not a big deal. They'll declare war soon enough anyway.

So...if I make a faction which has 50,000 mnaii in the treasury my protectorate, I would be a very rich man the next turn?

Yes, I do believe I remember people saying there was something wrong with the money script because after one turn they gained many 100's of thousands of mnai....turned out a protectorate of theirs was the donor IIRC.

I've never had a protectorate in EB though, and only once in vanilla...

ptolemy demanded that i become their protectorate, but i declined for two reasons: personal pride, even if it is a game i like to act like a REAL leader ie, no ones bitch. and the other reason was a war against the ptolemies could earn money in the long term. thinking ahead children

I rarely even get the option to make them my protectorate, are there any special conditions?

How about pwning their armies and being the resident of most of their former cities?

Possibly it carries the same restriction as suggesting alliances, that you can't do it while you're at war with their ally. Possibly also restricted if you're allied to one of their enemies, I'm not sure.
