    Default Your Largest Battle

In my Makedonia campaign, I just fought the biggest battle I have ever fought on RTW or any of its mods. I had fraps running in the background and I took about a hundred screenshots. Or at least, that's what I thought. For some reason the permissions on my (new) Vista computer were set up in such a way that it didn't save any of the screenshots I took. All I have is a screenshot of the beginning of the battle when I accidentally presses 'Printscreen'. :(

I had just assembled the greatest army ever seen in my campaign, consisting almost exclusively out of veteran elite units. The same turn as I had assembled my army, one of my spies spotted the Ptolemaic army. Three full stacks, 8000 men in total, all standing right next to each other, just north-east of Hierosolyma. This would be the perfect opportunity to test my newly formed army and a chance to get a real battle out of this game, so I moved my army (2800 men) into attack position.

I moved my army in a large semi-circle, facing outwards, on top of a hill. Argyraspides in the middle, Pezhetairoi on either side and Hypaspistai and Pheraspides on the flanks. Naked Galatians in reserve behind the Argyraspides, behind them two units of sphendonetai and behind them my General and the 400 prodromoi under his command. I was rather fortunate that the enemy had very little cavalry and missile troops. His men consisted mainly of low-grade soldiers, like pantodapoi, Ethiopian spearmen, Galatian Swordsmen, cheap phalanx units and thorakitai. Instead of attacking me right away, he cleverly waited until his other armies were ready. His second army he combined with his first, while he put the rest in reserve. After his missile troops had done their damage he attacked, with all his 5500 men. But of course, his farmers were no match for my elite soldiers and my phalanx cut down wave after wave of cheap spearmen. When his general outflanked me and attacked my rear he was killed and as soon as his army saw its leader had fallen it started to break up. At that moment I send in my Galatian naked mercenaries. It was a slaughter. In a desperate attempt to save the battle the enemy rushed in his reinforcements, but when they saw their fleeing friends they too decided to run away. In the ensuing pursuit, my men killed thousands of poor Ptolemaic soldiers. After about 90 minutes the battle was over. The ground was littered with bodies, piled high near my phalanx, spread out over the rest of the battlefield. My soldiers, had killed a total of 6500 men, while only losing about 250 men. One prodromoi unit alone scored near 1000 kills and both Galatian Tindonetai units killed over 600 men each.

My general had certainly got his fame and glory for his role in this heroic victory. After the battle he was awarded 3 command stars.

Anyway, as I said earlier, I only managed to get a single screenshot due to a stupid mistake. It doesn't show much, but you can see the units in my army. You can also see the three enemy armies as they approach. (Even clearer on the minimap.)

I really wish I had the screenshots I took during the battle, it would have made such an awesome AAR. Though I wouldn't call this an AAR, I just had to tell you about this awesome gaming experience (one of the best battles I've had in EB) and at the same time, I'm wondering if you've ever seen such a huge battle in your campaign. (I was playing on Medium/Medium by the way.)

So... What's the biggest battle you've had to fight?

My battles are quite small compared to everyone elses 'bout 1000/1000, would probably be more but in my current campaign I forgot to switch to huge.

    Greatest Battle? Hmmm....

~2000 fucked-up Polybian Romans in Central Greece, surrounded by 4 Epirote Armies, aach with at least 4-star General...

Well, got attacked, every 15 minutes ~3000 man rushed into the battlefield... long story, at the end 160 man including my general have killed ~8000 Epirotes ^^

I had my largest battle in BI when I attacked a horde (3 stacks) with my main army (I was playing the Franks). A timely charge of my Paladins saved the day.

Uhm, you know, Rome had a Thermopylae in history... 20,000 Romans crushed 10,000 Hellenes, with minimal Roman casualties. Fairly different from the famous Thermopylae.
