    Default Battlefield 2

I finally got an account on multiplayer. I've been playing for two days, and I have the following badges (all in lowest grade) and ribbons:

    Airborne Ribbon
    Anti-Tank Badge
    Support Badge
Sniper Badge (first one I got, but I had to re-earn it and the spec ops badge for some reason, it didn't record)
    Special Operations Badge
    Assault Badge
    Medic Badge

I'm working on the last kit badge, Engineer.

Who else plays, and what're your accounts like? It's a couple of years old, but I know Warman and some others still play.

I recommend, if you are looking for a fun group to play in, take a look at a MyIS tournament for it. The australian 2142 version i play in is great fun

As for BF2, i havent played in years...

I just got the Basic Pistol Combat Badge and the Engineer Badge, using a pistol for 80% of my kills in the round. I'll have the Veteran Pistol Badge as soon as I get 50 global kills. I'm only at about 14 now. My rank is 20 points away from being a Lance Corporal.

It's a fun game, but I pretty much quit playing after I got MTWII. All the guys I played with moved to 2142 and I have no interest in paying for an expansion pack that's more limited than the original.

Forget that infantry stuff, learn to fly a plane or gun a helicopter. You'll bounce up ranks in a hurry. Personally I always had the most fun being commander of a responsive team, which was pretty rare but excellent when it came around.

Loved my time in the game... Played mostly medic, but tried a bit of everything... Was really getting into the Zen of Sniper before moving on...

I would play now but there is no widescreen support and as with Ramses II CP above couldn't really get into 2142...

If they wanted to do a future one, why not go the whole hog with space ships, lasers and so on... Show Battlefront how it should be done...

I used to play some, but then got bored of BF2 and moved on.

Really loved playing an Engineer and then just sit in a tank the whole game long; you get can get crazy amount of kills if they aren't too smart

Considering that I have absolutely no skill in flying jets, and I have no joystick, and that single-player maps are too small for actual flying, the most I do in jets is to get from point A to point B before I parachute out.

Helicopters, on the other hand, I can easily fly. It's hovering with a mouse that tends to be a pain.

The Battlefield Gotland servers are great for that. Everyone works together and plays as a team on most of their servers, right down to the squad level.

EDIT: I got my Lance Corporal rank, and I'm about halfway to Corporal. I have the Engineer Badge and unlocked the G36 and M95. Enemies don't know what hit them when you pull the M95 out at long range. Also, what servers do you play on, Warman?

When picking unlocks in BF2 pick carefully.

The second upgrade is much better for special forces, as it is for assault.

It wouldn't give me my Air Defence Badge in Bronze, even though I spent (and counted) the required five minutes. Any ideas why? I'm sure the server was ranked.

The awards can be a little wonky, and sometimes I think they have a server side filter that tosses them out if you're just whoring to get them. I got the knife badge no less than three times, but it's still not awarded in my stats. Don't worry about it.

I finally got my first medal!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

A Bronze Star in my first time as commander! That's what I like about this server - they're all very good to people, and they'll let a complete newbie try his hand at command. Apparently I didn't do so badly.

Ramses, the reason you did not recieve the badge can boil down to two things:

    A) You won the badge on an SF Map - AFAIK, they don't carry over.
    B) You quit before the round was over. AFAIK (again), that eliminates the medal win from your stats.

I've recently started playing again. Don't know the English equivalent of the Dutch rank name, but I have a little more than 9000 points. Anyway, I'm currently only playing inf. only maps, I was getting rather tired of those über-pilots and tank whores, and I've always liked close combat better.

Heh, there are other reasons. Two of those times with the knife badge I was playing on pistol/knife only servers, which are illegitimate. ::

FYI on playing commander, one of the best things you can do as commander is constantly spot the enemy on the overhead map. If you run a scan (The side sweeping rather than the circling drone) only you get that data, but if you then right click and 'spot' the red dots they'll show up for the whole team. Also you can zoom in the commander map to spot those fiddly snipers in odd, heli-dropped or etc. spots. Good players can take immediate advantage of that info.

Hmm, you probably know this, but you can drop a supply crate on a destroyed commander resource to heal it.

Personally I also try to respond to any and all requests from the team, even if they don't seem to make sense (Unless they come from an idiot TK'er).

Oh, I just presumed you were playing on a ranked server. My bad.

By the way, Strike at Karkand is a good place to get pistol and knife, especially in close quarters near the Hotel, and in the Factory District on 64 player maps.

I was running constant UAVs and Scans, and all their troops of note were concentrated at the UAV. Thanks for the reference though, I'll need that in the future.

EDIT: Silver Star and Basic Explosive Ordinance in back-to-back rounds.

I play it on the PS2 which I know doesn't even compare to the PC version but still... I am godlike on it. I play as rooster1 if anyone else plays the PS2 version. I stopped playing a few months ago when I got sick of all the wall hacks. My PPH is somewhere around 140 or 150. I play mostly medic and occasionly assault.

Just started playing BF2 again after a loooong hiatus (1.5+ years). In fact it's been a long time since I played any online shooters, period. It feels great to be playing BF2 again but boy, am I rusty! Oddly enough I had an easier time picking up the hyper-kinetic TF2 and pwning other people than I did suiting up as my beloved Spec Ops class and doing the same. It's not that my basic strats are bad but my crouching/going prone in a flash skills are definitely rusty. Not to mention I need a remedial course in nade tossing...

One thing I noticed is that all-infantry map servers seem pretty prevalent nowadays. They're ok for those claustrophobic city maps but I'm definitely not a fan of those for the really big maps. I don't see why so many people despise vehicles in this game. One of the reasons why I love the BF series is because of the integration of vehicles and their contribution to the 'chaos factor' that makes online shooters so much fun. There's nothing more irritating than spending a long time humping it on foot to a far flung objective only to get whacked once you arrive. Also nothing gets the juices flowing faster than seeing an armored beast bearing down on your position when all you're armed with is a pea shooter and some nades.

As others have mentioned, the biggest problem I have with planes & helos in BF2 is the markedly smaller airspace one has to deal with. It really takes the fun out of flying when you constantly have be mindful of these no-fly zones while trying not to get shot down. In contrast flying was an absolute joy in BF1942 and its Desert Combat mod... not to mention there was a much better balance between ground & air assets in that game.

In reference to the discussion regarding team sizes I must chime in as an avid supporter of the 64 player map experience... I never join a server with less than 50 people. 32 vs. 32 feels much more realistic and visceral and simply 'feels right', especially when vehicles come into play. I can see the wisdom of smaller teams for smaller maps but a true 'squad vs squad' experience is more prevalent on servers with more players.

One thing I have noticed is that the skill, cooperation and overall friendliness of your average teammates is markedly higher than when I stopped playing a year and a half ago. I assume the immature, twitch kiddie crowd has moved onto other games like BF2142 and TF2.

I picked up the Euro Force/Armored Assault booster pack for $10 but noticed the alarming lack of servers running those maps. Is it the same story with the Special Forces expansion pack?

Can anyone recommend some good mods for BF2?

Yeah, the Euro and AA packs were pretty much complete failures. I know there are some very good mods out there, but you have to get hooked up to their respective communities to have any chance of finding a good MP mod game. I don't have the time for that myself.

It's too bad about the packs. People complained about the Euro maps, but I really liked two of them and having all out tank wars could be a blast.

Spec Ops is a little different as, from what I understand, all the Spec Ops maps are infantry specific. That's exactly why I never bought SO, so I don't know what the server situation is for it.

Special Operations maps can include helicopters, boats, APCs, IFVs, and more.

A Quick BF2 Video I Made To Test Fraps.

I wish there was another Fraps-style recorder that allows infinite time and is free. This is the 30-second limit Fraps pieced together, which is partially why I'm playing so poorly. I always had to have a finger on F9 so it kept recording.

EDIT: Made a better version using remixer.

Yup, I agree. I use to play the game back in high school. I haven't played in a few years.

I was an ace with the helicopter, could pretty evade any SAM and kill anything with the wire guided when I wasn't flying.

    I was decent at jets.

I think I enjoyed playing the SF model the best. I didn't like the expansions. I only bought the first one.

That is good news. One of the best features of this game is the team system, even though it used to be sadly ignored or abused by many players when the game had just come out. Nothing beats a few rounds of BF2 with an alert squad, a good squad leader and and a good mix of skills.

The two servers I play on mostly (they're Karkand only, but still lots of fun) are [ISI] Christian and THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE (Run by =HOG= Clan). The people there tend to be older, use VoIP (I wish my microphone worked), and join squads. Very fun games in all.

Karkand is great fun, but only for individual kills, not for squad action. Most American squads on Karkand maps blindly charge into town while Arab squads blindly charge out of it, and both usually get stuck in the nade wars at the town's narrow entrance. Arab squads have more room for maneuver as long as the American side has the initiative and reaches into town to, say, the market place. Anyway I prefer to snipe and tank-kill on Karkand servers. My ideal squad map is Dragon Valley, where you can use choppers, the frontline is constantly shifting so you can recap flags and raise your score all the time, and where including hardware like tanks and apc's in your squad really pays off. Happy boombooms, Maniac.

Not with =HOG=. Their server has a lot of squads from various clans, and it's really great to work together, especially in the factory area of town, and in the suburbs. The [ISI] server is very individual, but =HOG= is not.

EDIT: It's Infantry-Only Karkand, so that helps.

Gulf of Oman and Operation Clean Sweep are two my favorite maps, lots of actions on ground and air. I usually play at single player (with or without 64 SP mod) before I finally got a decent internet connection.
