    Default Austria

    Hey,

WIth Ichigo looking for books about Brandenburg/Prussia, I was looking for books about Austria/HRE. I found one (Leopold I of Austria), but anyone know any good one about Austria/HRE in 1648-1715 or 1740-1748?

Edit: Plus does anyone have any information about Europe in 1660 (planning on doing a IH about it and need some information for my IH,first chapter anyhow)

My advice would be starting the IH in 1648, after the end of the wars about religion and the Dutch independence.

Actually at first wanted to do it at 1617 (a year before it started), but don't know if I should, or start it after.

From what I've heard until the French invented modern conscription in the 1790's armies larger than 100000 weren't common. In fact when Leopold I raised an army of that size it was the largest in europe.

Also a little googlage on Austrian armies in the 17th century turned up this page on Leopold I.

Finished my Leopold I Of Austria Book today! 203 pages plus Maps, and Family Trees!! Impressive for a book published in 1977 I guess!

Yea, in the Wikipedia Article abotu Spanish War of Succesion:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Spanish_Succession

It Said Austria had a army of 90,000 in 1701 (in the notes). In the War of the Grand Allaices:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Grand_Alliance

it said France had a army of 450,000, but it was a paper figure, and actually only had about 300,000-350,000. England Had about 35,000-44,000 and Dutch had about 37,979 Sometime in the Late 1600's (don't remember the year, saw it on a army link which only had a few armies sizes here and there, mostly in the late 1700's). Check the Notes for some intersting army stuff.

Thank you Lars for the link !!!! I love you !!!!

And I think it should be kept in mind that these number include militas and other part time formations.

The standing army before France joined the war was increased from 70000 to 130000, but as far as with militias included I'm not sure. Brandenburg had no army to speak of at the time afaik.

And from what I've read the English weren't much for keeping any kind of large standing army either.

Yeah I don't think many countries did at the time. It was hard for the government to get money from the people to support a standing army, or so was the case with Brandenburg. There was widespread looting and torture, which I assume was to pay for their armies.
