    Default !!HELP!!

Dell sucks so i cant get them to help unless i pay

Alright my laptop was working perfectly fine this morning then just shutoff for no reason battery is fully charged power cord works and everything seemed to be fine i kept trying my different ways of fixing this problem none of them worked. Removing battery with just cord plugged in... no... removing all external cords and only having battery.... no... and i went on down the list.

Now about 5 seconds ago my laptop started to smell kind of like one of those confetti poppers after it was popped.. you know a sulfur blackpowder smell and since my warrenty has expired i have no way to contact dell unless i have a credit card which i dont.... so i need some quick help what do i do

update: the smell is coming from the power port on my laptop and i thought i should add that it is a dell inspirion B120

Okay, just a wild guess, but it's probably an electrical fault in your power supply. Unplug the laptop and don't attempt to plug it back in or turn it back on. Your data should be okay, but there are no guarantees. You don't have any backups?

You need a converter cable to hook a laptop hard drive to a desktop, so go buy one of those. Fry's sells them for ~$10 US. Hook your laptop drive up as a second HD on your desktop and make a good backup.

If the drive doesn't show up check the name of the maker on the case and visit their website on your desktop to download their drive tool set. That's the best way to evaluate if the drive survived. Run the tools, usually you copy them to a disk and boot from it, and cross your fingers.

    Good luck.

Mmm Mmm... smells like Dell is BBQing tonight.
Sounds like the PSU has sizzled mate. The HD will be fine, just back it up like Jkarinen suggested.
Oh and remember. If you suspect something has fried but you aren't sure, just check your warranty. If it's minimally out of warranty date, it is surely a hardware fault.

As was said, the blue-smoke that makes electronics work, in this the PSU, has escaped. Fortunately it doesn't appear to have affected your hard-drive, and since the warranty has run out, feel free to rip the thing apart in your attempt to salvage the HD.
