    Default Personilized Army

We've asked about endlessly what are favorite units are, but what about full armies? The rules being that you pick your FAVORITE army make up (Units and Formation) and be creative. It doesn't really have to make sense, so long as you like it and it accomplshes what you want. Post as many as you want too! Supply Pictures if you like, I'll get mine up once MTW starts working right (Rather humorously, the A.I. has come to the conclusion that my castle walls DO NOT exist)

    Mine

    As Byzantines

    Space for Picture

My Byzantine God-General leading an army of all UM. Rather inexpensive, yet effective!

    Space for Picture

Same General leading only HA. I actually faced this army as the Italians, rather scary with an expert A.I.

    As English

    Space for Picture

10 units of Longbowmen, 4 Billmen, and 2 Gallowglasses. With so many Longbowmen, few cavalry actually reach my lines.

    As Turks

    Space for Picture

6 Arquebusiers, 6 JHI, and 4 SHC. Done Properly (which I rarely do ) I can use this setup to rout the enemy within a matter of seconds.

    England:

    6 longbowmen
    6 billmen
    4 chivalric knights

    France:

    4 swiss pikemen
    4 swiss halberdiers
    4 genoese sailors
    4 chivalric knights/lancers eventually

Those are the only two factions I've gotten far enough with to get my ideal armies.. lol

    Hmm, choices, choices...

    Almohods:

    8 Almohod Urban Militia
    4 muwahid foot soldiers
    4 Faris

A rather cheap army, and can be easily replaced. The AUM's can clock just about any other infantry with proper work. The muwahid's are to serve as flankers and anti-cavalry, at least for a little while. Faris serve as a long range threat in addition to rounding up routers and executing quite effective flanking maneuevers.

    Mongols:

    6 Mongol horse archers
    10 Mongol Heavy Cavalry

Lotsa mobility, lots of charge power, just lotsa awesomeness in general.

    Italians:

    8 arbalesters
    8 Italian infantry

The arbs, in such numbers, tear apart any kind of infantry. The Italian infantry are excellent anti-cavalry, and in the early period, can dispose of nearly anything else as well. Obviously, I'm not looking for prisoners with this army.

Well, from my current Armenia/Early/Hard/GA/XL 3.0 campaign...

    2 x Naxarars (42 florins each per turn) 84
2 x Armenian Cavalry (60 florins each per turn) 120
    4 x Archers (37 florins each per turn) 148
6 x Armenian Infantry (62 florins each per turn) 372

Of course, in the King's army, I'd have to make alterations to that because that army is 960 men, his would equal 961 which just wouldn't work. I use the default unit scale.

That army costs me about 724 florins per turn. There would be alterations depending on how I feel, of course, but I think Armenian Infantry are hardy fellows. Spearmen and Armoured Spearmen...nah. Horse Archers...nah. I like my army how it is. I'm already in the process of building a second one, although the first deviates from the above construction because King Reuben I leads it.

In fact, I'm amazed how well Armenian Infantry do. It helps that I'm fighting downhill, I guess, in many battles. However, I never expect Armenian Cavalry to drop like flies to them! LOL!

PS: Is it Armenian Cavalry or Armenian Heavy Cavalry? Can't remember now...

I believe in a society without rules, laws and regulations. A society where there are only ideas - strict ideas that must be followed to by the letter - and any failure to comply is punishable by death. This would be no dictatorship or police state, no one would be living in terror. It would merely be a 'reassessment of one's preferences,' people living in 'not-so-optimistic security.' So, welcome, those who are 'longing to be blindly obedient and loyal, unbeknownst to them.'

    Danes/Early vs European enemies

    3xClansmen
    5xVikings
    4xFeudal Sergeants
    2xMounted Sergeants
    2xRoyal Bodyguards

Usually deployed like this for attacks:

    ------------Clansmen------Clansmen------Clansmen-------------
    --Viks--Viks--Feudals--Feudals--Feudals--Feudals--Viks--Viks--
    Mounteds-Royals---------Viks-Royals--------------------Mounteds

I spread the Clansmen thin (2 ranks) across the front, move the cav to flank (except for the commander), and push forward. When I get within arrow range, I send the Clansmen into a run with the others coming behind. The Clansmen will either catch the enemy archers, or force them to run through the enemy line causing chaos. They will hit the line and do some decent damage before they get beat up, but by then the Feudals are there to secure the center and the Vikings are chewing up the sides. The mounted troops then swing around to finish off the archers or rear-end a unit to start the routs, while the reserve Viking unit and commander deal with any trouble spots. The Clansmen (what's left of them) usually can make it through the line, and can be used to chase routers or rear-end a pesky unit.

As you can see, I don't have the time, skill, or patience to control missile troops. Clansmen are cheap. Replace Vikings with Huscarles for even better results.

Its been a long time but I like Novgorod:

    10-12 steppe heavy cavalry
    2 steppe cavalry
    2 boyars

    Not imaginative but effective.

On the defensive you can't really beat 4 Huscarles, 2 archers, 2 catapults, 2 clansmen/gallowglasses and some light cav for skirmishing.

OK, its far from original but in strong position on a budget this would be hard to beat.

With all due respect, 16 organ guns will mostly fire at each other because of the short range!

    5 Chivalric Seargents
    2 Halb
    7 Arbs
    1 Mounted Seargents
    1 Chivalric Knights

My standard anti-horde combo (Add large reserves of arbs, spears and mounted seargents for initial battle in Khazar or Volga-Bulgaria) but pretty much works against any kind of army.

I'm not one for "standardised" armies really, but whenever I play Turks then I usually end up with something like:

    4 x Turcoman Horse as a screen
4 x Ottoman infantry as first wave
4 x Saracen inf, flanked by 2 x Muwahid (or is that another faction?....) or gazis
2 x heavy cav depending on what's available (AHC, Steppe heavies, Ghulam BGs etc)

As I tech up my provinces, then more janissaries can be fed into the line as appropriate

General tactic being shoot em up with the THAs, trying to pull out any vulnerable units, add in fire from the Ottos as the main line advances, once the main line hits then Ottos and THAs flank attack, with heavy cav in reserve or on flanks ready. I do like to take the enemy apart piece by piece with the horse archers and Ottos in the front line so the main line is just "turning the tide" when it hits.

Generally I look at the army I'm about to attack and put together whatever looks like a good counter army from what's available.

When facing the Horde, I like to have a couple of gunpowder units (which means mercenaries, of course), but I find them indispensible, as they really scare the horses

My Horde-killling army playing as the Almohads in Syria:

    3 x Nubian Spears
    2 x Muwahid Spears
    6 x Pavise Arbalests
    1 x Organ Gun
    4 x BedouinCamels (inc General)

Reinforcements: alternating camels and missile units

Tactic: occupy high ground near baseline, make enemy come to you. Punish them with missile fire, use Nubians to hold line and Muwahids to rush any gaps. As enemy wavers, flank with camels and chase them like hell. Then run back to baseline and repeat!

    English

    2x Chivalric Knights
    2x Chivalric Foot Knights
    6x Billmen
    6x Longbowmen

    French

    2-4x Chivalric Knights
2-4x Chivalric Foot Knights (from Ile-de-France...)
    4-8x Arbalesters
    4-8x Halberdiers

    Ottomans

    7x Janissary Infantry
    7x Janissary Heavy Infantry
    2x Turcoman horsemen

    Byzantines (early)

    12x Kataphraktoi
    2x Byzantine Cavalry
(not really a plausible army, but a good one)

    Byzantines (later eras)

    2x Kataphraktoi
    2x Pronoiai
    2x Byzantine Cavalry
5x Latin Auxillaries (modded into polearms with stats reminiscent of Halberdiers)
    5x Arbalesters
(not very plausible either, since LAs are still too expensive to keep in larger numbers)

    Holy Roman Empire

    16x Gothic Knights from Saxony
