Thread: Syracusan and Massillan hoplites

    Default Syracusan and Massillan hoplites

Are Hellenic factions the only ones who are able to recruit Syracusan and Masillan hoplites? I'm playing as Rome and even with level 4 MIC I can't get anything past classical hoplites and Greek medium calvary in Syracuse. Which really sucks because I loved that unit when I was playing as the independent greeks.

According the the recruitment viewer only Koinon Hellenon can recruit syrakosioi hoplitai (level 3 native MIC) and massaliotai hoplitai can be recruited by Koinon Hellenon, Aedui and Arverni (level 3 regional MIC).

You should get the recruitment viewer, it's a great tool and easy to use. See this thread for more information.

Mercenaries are the only way Massaliotai can be gotten by any other faction besides the Gaulish ones and Carthage, yup. Which is a pity, because they are really quite nasty and rather cheap.

The Syracusians in the other hand, can not be recruited by Carthage, even as mercenaries

I thinks the Hellenistic factions can recruit the Massillian hoplites as well

do you really find them so good? i can never make them keep their awesome sword out - they just switch to spears, upon which they become inferior hoplites.

it's been a problem that i've had with this kind of unit for a long time - you can never make them keep the better longsword out, because when they get knocked down they switch to spears. i know that if you watch them carefully, after a certain number have taken to the spear due to the aforementioned, you can click again and they will go back to the sword - but who has time during battle to be closely watching each unit of dual-wielding sword and spear units, to make sure they've got the right weapon out??

well, i did post this concern before but someone told me it was better this way with swords 1st and spears secondary....although i must admit, i'm still confused by it.

this is why i can't understand praise for massilian hoplites - yeah, they would be damn awesome if there wasn't the bug but there IS the bug, so i don't understand how people laud them so much over just common hoplites anyway, because in the end they are both fighting with the spear in the same old way anyway. how come i don't hear such praise for 1.sword/2.spear units like the rycalawre, arjoz, hypaspists, etc. then also?
