Provinces Suddenly Coming Over To Me

Something rather confusing has happened to me in a relatively short time. Provinces suddenly come under my control, usually with a few decent troops and plenty of apeleutheroi, and at the same time enemy factions declare war on me. I simply don't know if these factions were controlling the provinces at the time, but they're nearby, so it seems likely. Is this simply a result of provinces rebelling and choosing to side with me? What's most confusing is that I get no message explaining what's happened, so it once took several turns before I even realized the province was mine. What is this? Rebellion or a bug?

Those are indeed rebelling cities, and RTW is hardcoded to put the receiver of the city at war with the original owner.

what cities are being handed over to you? if, as mentioned before, they were your own cities, they should be coming back to your side, as ive seen happen with the AI too much....

And if your KH, then there is a fair chance that any rebeling greek colony will join you. From Trapezous to Kyrenia to Syracusa to Massilia to Emporion, theres a good 20 or so of them.

So is it just typical of Koinon Hellenon or do other factions experience this too? I got to 226 B.C. on my KH game, and had this happen a number of times, it was always quite a surprise and never really convenient.

I was eventually involuntarily at war with Ptolemy, Seleukia, Lusottan, Sauromatae, Hayasdan, and Getai (Who I had been allied with for 50 years

), all because of rebel colonies. It was kinda cool though having that one isolated colony over in Iberia when I had never moved an army past Italy.

Strangest of all was the time I conquered an Eleutheroi tribal-type village in Asia Minor. I held onto it for a few turns then abandoned it, at which point the colony rebelled and ended up controlled by the Aedui which of course put me at war with the Aedui. It was strange, because the Aedui hadn't gone east of Italy yet.

It can be a bit of a nuisance with Saba as well. You're hidden away in your wee corner of Arabia minding your own business when suddenly an African city rebels to you putting you at war with the Ptolemies, your only trading partner and a rather difficult foe for your little country.

It's because cities tend to go to a faction based on their culture. The city in Galatia in the middle of Asia Minor is full of Galatians, which are basically Gauls that went east. So that city can end up rebelling in strange ways.
And it never has anything to do with where the faction that gets the city is. The game apparently only looks at culture, not distance or anything like that.

Yup, an interesting side game if you're lucky enough for it to happen in an Aedui/Arverni campaign

Does anyone know if the development of culture buildings for a faction (temples, schools etc) has anything to do with it?

That's a fun one - Palmyra has been rebelling to me (Saba) on and off for the last 10 years. Fortunately, the owner is Ptolemy, who I'm already at war with. I just trash it and move the garrison off to raid their levantine colonies, then it rebels back to them.
I'm almost ready to start my war with AS, though, so maybe I'll keep it next time. . .

It is purely dependent on the culture as defined by the culture of the governors palace, go and build your cultures palace in a city and it will rebel to you, untill someone else builds a new culture.

This of course means that huge cities of another culture that you capture are always going to have an increased risk of rebelling.
