I think I know the reason for it. Ships cannot target other ships unless they are on the same sea zone at the start of a turn. However, if the AI keeps moving the ship, there is no way to fight it. It keeps avoiding all ships sent to sink it.

The Italians did that to my Egyptians blocking Khazar and Kiev permanently and Constantinople every other turn. Even when I am not targetting it, it keeps moving so I think that may be the reason.

Stupid question here: I build all upgrades but when I want to upgrade the docks it says that I need a compass. In what year was the compass inveneted cuz if I remember correctly that is in the beginning of the game?

Was going to start a new thread but I saw this one so am posting here instead. I have left show computer moves on to verify if it is the fact that they are moving that causes the naval attack not to work. However, this is not the case - the fleets do NOT move and yet the attack seems to fail.

Original (as intended to post in new thread) follows:

I have a problem with naval battles not seeming to work. Turn after turn, I tell my Longboats / Caravels to attack the Almohad fleets (I'm at war with them and I want to clear a way for a naval invasion).

However, despite giving the order and the confirmatory dialogue box coming up - "This fleet belongs to the Almohads. Do you wish to attack?" nothing happens at the end of the turn.

I thought maybe the "speed" factor had to do with it, maybe the Dhows were outrunning my Caravels. So I send a bunch of Longboats after them - same result.

But on the other hand, the Almohads seem to be able to fight a naval battle whenever they feel like it - they've attacked my fleets twice but I can't return the favour!

This is really pissing me off!!! I can send the saved game if it is of any help. Just tell me where to send it to.

Or am I doing something wrong??
    One day, maybe ...

on some occasions, the AI will *purposedly* move a ship around between two sea regions over and over again. The HRE did that stupid trick to destroy my trade and disrupt troop movement. Took me decades to finally chase them out.
