Default Destroying Wonders and Unique buildings???

Thats the question fellas... Should I or Should I NOT destroy UNIQUE buildings such as the temple at Delphi, the Acropolis, etc.

As I am playing the Aedui I took over Rome and the city right below it, both have large unique historical buildings... I am hesitant to destroy them, although they give 20k...

What should I do fellas, I am an Aedui and pillaged through Rome????? (but a historically sencitive gaul)

You're playing a tribe of northern barbarians. You think if they managed to sack Rome, they wouldn't utterly loot the temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus? In the name of roleplaying alone, unless the general who captured the city as some special "Romanized Gaul" trait (or some other trait that would make him averse to enormous profit at the expense of foreigner enemies), I'd tear that sucker down.

    Cheers.

Many of the uniques were made destroyable so that the ones that would historically give a huge profit will give you one in the game.

I personally never destroy anything since once it is gone it can never come back. But if you are looting Rome or something, feel free to destroy everything and make off with all their valuables.

On the other hand, a temple to a mighty god is a temple to a mighty god. That's Polytheism for you.

Unless I really need the money I never touch the wonders. To me they are a legacy for future generations and I can't make myself destroy them even when playing barbarians :)

well... thats a thing I am always short on $$ I have yet to break 9K profit a turn

Rome is now dead for messing with GAUL! But... I got 2 wonders littering in Italy and I am wondering wheater or not to destroy them. Plus will have the same issue when I decide to follow the footsteps of Brennus in Greece.

For roleplaying reasons I would not destroy any temples (except for the Romans, when I had made a proper evocato prior ;-). Any other building, unique or not, can fall victim of plundering if I am not playing someone of the same culture. When I had sacked Rome once with the Sweboz I had behaved in a way that the Romans would have greeted the Vandals as liberators.

Don't think of them as being destroyed, just think that you're relieving the burdon of having to hold so many valuables in such wartorn areas. You're actually protecting the monuments and artefacts from potential thieves!

At least, that's how Scipio, the general who conquered Greece in my Romani game, is justifying it.

True, but how mighty can a god be if he can't even protect his own worshipers? Clearly he doesn't deserve such a... lucrative temple.

Hmm, hugely valuable monument to some putz my enemy thinks is cool? Bring on the wagons! We just got paid!!
Having said that, I still haven't plundered Alexander's tomb. I'll keep it as a taunt to those silly greeks.

More of a role-playing and to some extent an economic problem.

Many wonders provide trade, population (taxation ) and sometimes troop morale and experience advantages. So, unless you're dug down deep and utterly need the one time loot money, keeping them at hand in the long term is more profitable. Their happiness and law bonuses notwithstanding, but that one may work the other way as well (culture penalty).

When it boils down to role-playing, chances are nearly infinite. You may have your conquering general(s), or your leader in case of a more centralized government approach, decide the destiny of captured wonders depending on their traits. You may pursue revenge upon their former owners and want to destroy everything associated with them. OTOH you may prefer claiming their heritage and patronize their former subjects etc. etc...

Personally, I have kept the Goidelic temple complex in Ulster as Lusotana.

So far as the economics of it go, you've really got to consider the time value of money. Some monument might bring in an extra 30 - 40 mnai per turn for 100 years. But if you can loot it for 10,000 and invest that in a bunch of soldiers who deliver returns to the treasury by, er, um... well, let's just say that Irving Fisher would be proud. Actually, it's not just uniques, either. Many city improvements (not to mention their populations) are more valuable when they're "liquidated" for investable cash, and don't get me started on comparing the net present value of mercenary units to native troops.

That said, there are some monuments that I just can't bring myself to destroy.

IF you want to roleplay this aspect then, unless your general has developped an obssesive hatred towards the owners-- keep. They are wonderous for a reason: anyone seeing them for the first time would be awed into sheer humility.

And if you do decide to burn them, blame it on a courtesan.

Are there any negative traits for looting certain buildings?

Playing as the seleukids I came across a temple complex in the East, I can't remember the name, but it's one that they looted historically(twice I think).
Anyway one wouldn't want to break with tradition, would one, eh? The payout was quite fruity at 20,000 I do believe, and enhanced my sinews of war most unequivacally.

Most of the time I refrain from some such acts, as being unworthy of a civilised Greek. When one conquors, superiority should be demonstrated in all aspects, besides I like the history of greatness to be alive and kicking, it enriches my provinces.

That is an important question and honestly I would say yes. I personally love destroying things like that, whenever I conquer a specific area that I don't like I like to destroy all their most valued buildings and then destroy all the buildings and then basically sell them off to other people or just abandon them for rebels.

    Can you destroy the pyramids?

Because if you could, I would. It's a good way of making a statement. Not a particularly nice statement, mind you. But when it comes to the cut and thrust of international politics, nice guys (are) finish(ed) fast.

Is there any way of making destroying wonders remove some of the captured settlement's culture penalty, the size of the penalty that is removed depending on the size of the wonder and the similarity between the conquering nation and the nation who owned the settlement in 272 BC?

Well I got rid of the Big Temple are Rome, I waited for the faction leader and some hardcore vets to return to the city and lay to waist. (they returned from a pillaging expediton to KH as they kept sending shiploads of men to MY Italy, I did not destroy the wonders there as I will be coming back in a few years)

Capua has some Greek temples... but I think I'll wait and if the settlement revolts then is going

There is an interesting temple in one of the greek colonies in noth-east Iberia, its small only gives back 10k, the people there are chill, so I let them keep it.

I think that since I am playing the Aedui I will be destroying all 20k wonders of all exepct Celts and Celt-mixed peoples. Exept for a few that would be just too much work, like the pyramids and port in Carthege's Capital. HOWEVER, I will read the description 3 times before I sack it.
