I'd say the Carthaginian Sacred Band Cav.
Its really a skinning/texture resolution thing I think, the shield is too low res. (I think similar issue is the main problem with the KH Classical Hoplite) & the barding on the horse too clean/doesn't really look right somehow.

    With a re-skin it'll be awesome
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

i apperciate all the units but i just have my own hang ups on a few. I dunno i think mine have more to do with fashion and what i would personally like to wear in that environment. But that being said i dont like capes on infantry i think it would be more of a parade thing but i am no historian (ex mak's reformed phalanx sp?) big pike check, sheild check, chain mail check, purple cape Fabulous!
sorry i dont wanna offend anyone like i said its just a thing

A little off topic, but i have had a question about the gaesatae for a while now, and never came around asking it, and since the thread is about the aesthetics of the units i thought it was appropriate, so here it goes, why do the gaesatae have the scabbard on the right side? i was under the impression that you put the scabbard on the left side to make it easier to draw the sword? not that I mind, just a little curious.

back to the topic at hand, i always thought the botroas and gaeroas hairdo to be a little strange, their barbers must have some mad skills to the hair like that.

I think a few of the basic units are very plain looking - Hellenic slingers or archers, and pantodapoi (except for ptolemaic pantodapoi which have a bit of detail to them). Also the Numidian units are a bit bland. Back in vanilla they would have fitted right in, I suppose in EB you start to take intricate detail for granted

The scabbard was originaly on the right side and moved to the left much later. May be it is a matter of the shield?

That wouldn't be bad, but in my campaigns the Carthies really love that look.

Why do the Gaesatae wear scabbards anyway? Surely the rest of their clothes are somewhere else anyway, so why bring the scabbard?

The straight from vanilla 'sticky up fringe' effect the Gaeroas doesn't look good to me. But I suppose I'd rather have fabulous armour textures than good hair.

Where would they keep their swords then?
A baldric would make more sense than a belt to me though, but i don't know if Celts used that much

Uhm... those are the units who are happy to have plain clothing because they can't afford to buy a new set after each battle. I mean: how are you going to get all stains out of your clothing aftewards *and* keep them reasonably the same as before the entire battle?

Ugliest? Probably the cow hide patterned shields of the pantodapoi, and the helmets of the Iberian milities, caetrati and scutarii (however, the ugliness of helmets of the latter is more than made up for their badass spears ).

I have to admit I detest the head of the Spartiatai. Their hair just looks really dirty and the beard is really weird too.

Re: Gaesatae scabbards on right hip

Answer: That's where they wore them. We have numerous depictions of Gaesatae-type soldiers with their scabbard on their right hip. I'm not sure why they did it, but they did. Some of them did use baldrics to suspend their swords, and those could even hang at the left hip, but most wore a belt with scabbard on the right hip. The Greeks and most Romans (officers excluded) wore their swords on the left hip, but the Celts most often wore theirs on the right. Perhaps they wanted to do the cool sword twirl in their hands after drawing it from the scabbard (the grip would be wrong at first).

In this case you'll have to redo all unitcards for the Romans ;-)

Reenactors draw the sword from the right hip with a reverted grip (thumb down), so you have it in the right way once you turn your hand up again.

Interesting, very interesting indeed, i can see how people with a short sword would do that, but a long sword like the once the Gaesatae had, it seems hard to be able to draw it out. anyway, nice to see how the team takes notice of such small things as where the scabbard is placed. Maybe it´s as Konny stated, that it has something to do with the shield? since they do have pretty big shields, you would not want you scabbard to be in the way...though i have no idea, by no means expert on armor in ancient times...or any other era either.

I actually appreciate the "fabulous" joke, although it's a little hard to get across via writing when you can't do the voice, but I had to counter with the "balls" joke.

It doesnt matter if the units are ugly. They're very historical and that's all that matters.

I will admit that the Celtic Axemen look like they would more belong in the middle ages . Something about there armor just doesn't seem Classical Era .

I think that's just because the skins are relatively old. The modeling and skinning has improved a lot since those skins were done(certainly no disrespect intended there, but compare the Triarii 'face' shield to the latest shield textures).

Yep, this is the reason why non-luso Iberians look weird.

There is two old problems that I remember from .72

1-If playing on anything lower than "very high unt graphics" the Carthaginian general would look -horrifying- I remember having to zoom out in AAR pictures way back when.
2-There was some sort of insane black and orange facemask-wearing ninja in Thermon.
3-Pantodapoi fought like men(only oldbies will get this)

Now onto units, the only units that I don't like(other than the Iberians, but theres a reason for that) would probably be....Epeirote units.

The Green color irritates me for some reason(except on shields, where it looks great).

I really loved the Getic general actually. The helmet looks a little weird, but hey, no other general can say they are bedecked in gold

A unit I have a complaint with is the Komatai Epilektoi. The armor just looks a little bit like it's out of a low-budget movie. The metal pieces on the leather seeem too big to me. It's even worse considering the good job they did on studded leather with the Komatai Agrianai. In fact, I implore the team to replace the armor on the epilektoi with the armor used by the agrianai.

I also really loved the old Komatai, especially the good designs on the shields. I don't see why they would throw away such a well-done unit.

I've always been a little skeptical to the Helvetii phalanx. It's an awesome unit, don't get me wrong. It's just the torso that throws me off. It's supposed to be a celtic bronze cuirass. To me it looks like a fancy gold shirt out of a disco movie. The armor is too skintight. It needs to be a little "fatter" if you know what I mean. Add some more thickness and depth and it would look amazing. Just an idea. I am particulary fond of the celtic generals. They look so amazingly badass *drools*

As far as armour goes, the gaesatea have been stated like any other unit. You see, if you have a large shield, the only part of your body that is truly vulnerable is your head. And as it happens, gaesatae head are packaged in a high-quality helmet with cheekguards. That's good for four armour points, IIRC. An extra armour point has been added to all barbarian units for balancing reasons.
